Editorial Reviews

'Against Me! will release it's much-anticipated sixth full-length studio album titled Transgender Dysphoria Blues on Tuesday, January 21st on their own label, Total Treble. Transgender Dysphoria Blues is the intense follow-up to the band's previous full-length album, White Crosses, and stands as another major benchmark for the band and its career spanning 10+ years.

Recorded at Studio 606, Earth Sound Studio, Motor Studio, Total Treble Studio and mixed by Billy Bush (Garbage, Muse, Tegan And Sara), Transgender Dysphoria Blues is an insightful and highly-provocative 10-song offering written by frontwoman Laura Jane Grace, whose material examines one's grappling with gender dysphoria, the loss of a young friend and pure self discovery, as well as love and ultimate acceptace. Featuring Grace's signature explicit songwriting and dominant vocals, the album also features longtime guitarist/vocalist James Bowman, drummer Atom Willard and Fat Mike of NOFX on bass for &'FUCKMYLIFE666' and 'Unconditional Love'

Transgender Dysphoria Blues will be a supported with a full North American tour in 2014 with Inge Johansson formerly of the International Noise Conspiracy joining the band to play bass on the road. Details to be released soon

Against Me!s latest release has as its obvious focal point the recent transformation of lead singer/songwriter Tom Gabel to Laura Jane Grace. Making such a momentous change under such relentless public scrutiny takes reservoirs of courage and will that most of us can only dream of. A person, especially an artist, has to be true to their inner self and I applaud Laura's insistence on making her exterior match her interior.

Such life-defining events can serve as a creative springboard and the turmoil (including a new rhythm section and record label) has been channeled into a galvanizing new record. The ten songs are concise, with nothing over three and a half minutes. Against Me! hasn't lost their ear for the catchy riff or memorable melody either. And Grace's voice remains as commanding as ever. Her lyrics embody the torrent of emotions such a fundamental transformation provoke - rage, confusion and ultimately hope. The message is the essence of punk: compromising the core of your identity is death on the installment plan. I think that lesson can resonate with all of us, even if we don't have to make the sort of change Laura found necessary.

Transgender Dysphoria Blues tackles a topic I've never heard in rock music, and does it in a way that makes you both understand and want to rock out. The music is kick ass but the real meat is in the lyrics and story. Take this trip.

I have been waiting for this for a while. It is novel in the sense of it showcasing vocalist Laura Jane Grace’s new identity, her first album released since she became a woman, and exciting in the sense of it being another release from a legendary punk band.

Against Me!’s music has always possessed an exceptional staying power for me. The lyrics are always spot on, the high-energy harmonies are perfect and the guitars and drums rip through my consciousness like a bullet.

Here, the energy doesn’t wane – and I feel even a renewed intensity given the subject matter. The energy in Grace’s voice seems to come now from an even more intensely personal place.

This music evokes compassion and full-throated goodbye to the many hidden struggles of transgendered identity. Thank goodness for her, Laura Jean Grace has come out of hiding. Thank goodness for us, she’s still making incredibly powerful music.

The ridiculously catchy chord progression and chorus in “True Trans Soul Rebel” brings not just a desire to drive fast, fist-pump and shout along, but also brings a tear and a smile at the utter catharsis and redemption of her exclamations.

Listening to the songs and yearnings here feels almost voyeuristic to me, like reading someone’s diary, but we must remember that Laura Jane chose to share this with the world because she needs other people to listen to her story.

So listen to it, even if it makes you a little uncomfortable. But don’t listen out of pious liberal guilt. Listen because it’s fun and loud and energetic. Listen to it celebrating proudly that a tortured imprisoned soul finally found a way to live freely. And celebrate that some really damn good music came out of it

This is a perfect album. Laura Jane Grace, always a great writer and a brilliant singer, has outdone herself. There is a palpable sense of release now that she has abandoned obfuscation. There is not one bad track. True Trans Soul Rebel is more affecting than it was in last year's acoustic treatment, Drinking With The Jocks is punk ranting at its most infectious, but what is truly moving is just how wise and forgiving Laura Jane has become. There are very few albums whose last four tracks are as strong as these. I could not tell from listening that the band's personnel had changed. Against Me! are as tight and propulsive as they have ever been. A great American band.

These guys have been my favorite band since I first discovered them, right before Searching for a Former Clarity came out. I think everything they've done is great and remember thinking to myself after New Wave (my favorite album of theirs) came out that they could do absolutely anything musically and I'd still love it. They could put out a country or a hip-hop album and I'd think it was just as good as their other stuff. Then when I heard that Tom came out as trans and was going to be known as Laura my first thought was, 'Oh wow, what happens now? Are they going to call it quits? Is her voice going to be so different that I just won't recognize it anymore?' I had no idea. I was glad to find out that they were going to do at least one more album, but then when I heard the title, along with the two acoustic songs from the True Trans EP, I really didn't expect to like it much, if at all. (Maybe because the EP was only two acoustic songs without the context of an entire album, but I don't think I gave it enough of a chance.) For some reason I thought the lyrics were just going to be a bunch of 'I-used-to-be-a-guy-and-now-I'm-a-girl-get-used-to-it', navel-gazing nonsense. Well that was just plain stupid. I should have known better. Laura Jane Grace, now and when she was Tom Gabel, writes some of the best songs out there. She has an incredible talent for it, I don't know why I expected anything different. These are songs that anyone can relate to, no matter what their background or sexual identity. And the music and vocals and energy that these songs have are as great as anything they've ever done. Some may complain that they don't sound like the 'old Against Me!' or that because they have different members now than they did then that it's 'just not the same.' I say bullsh*t.Read more ›
