- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2015This book, along with my therapy and one or two other books, was a great help in feeling that it's OK to be trans. It gave me a strong start for transition, and the clearly explained processes were very helpful to me in determining my own path.
I purchased the hard copy for my wife; I also have a Kindle copy of the book, which I carried with me everywhere.
I have several books related to transition, and if I was to choose one book to recommend to anyone else, it would be this one. It is chock full of fairly up-to-date information, encouraging words, and plainly spoken enough that I didn't have to resort to a dictionary even once :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2015Excellent book, love it, very helpful and includes pitfalls and how to deal with them. I have felt female internally since early childhood but feel changing physically is too extreme. Yes brain scans show a difference but I feel that is partly due to modern society. Women have been made to look so good that we envy them so much that we want to be them. Also we hate what we are on the outside partly because no one loved us and encouraged us unconditionally, especially our parents. I would highly recommend filling your emotional love tank and accepting yourself as you are on the outside. We are not accustomed to acceptance so it may seem strange but with time and persistence you will become happy and content.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2013I read this book thoroughly a few months before I began hormones, which was recently. It was very well written and offered a lot of information about the transition process, organized from beginning to end of the process so to speak, so it's great for anyone who is beginning or for those who aren't transgender but want to know more about it. It is a guidebook as the title says. The medical information was relevant and consistent with what my doctor has explained.
My only problem that it constantly affirms the notion that being transgender means stigma, meanness towards you, or that your life will be more difficult because of your decision because of society or something. So far my experience has been totally different. My family and friends have been very supportive and it has actually been really nice. I feel better than I have ever felt before. I have fun going clothes shopping with woman friends. I even went to a friend's bachelor party as my true self- around 14 guys half of whom I didn't know- and we had one of the greatest weekends ever. It's like I feel so good and if someone wants to call me name or scowl at me aren't they the one who is unhappy? They can keep that. So I wish the book talked more about how much better your life can be instead of worrying what a bunch of prudes may think about you. Just like I only hear the older generation say things about race, LGBT 'non acceptance' will die with those miserable old farts. The new generation is mostly accepting and awesome. There are plenty of people here to give you what you need. Balance between the extremes of fear and pride and you're set.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2016This is an excellent guide, a road map of sorts, to guide you through your journey to become your true self.
This book was a great help in my plotting my own course to finally become Alana.
I will add though, for those of you just beginning your journey. You can read about it, watch videos about it, listen to others talk about it. But until you are there yourself, you cannot know what it is like. Everyone's journey is a little bit different, as we are each unique individuals. And transitioning is about a million times more complex than I ever imagined. I tell you this, not to discourage you, but to better prepare you. It is a wonderful journey, just don't rush it. Take baby steps, and live YOUR life to its fullest. And always, always, Love yourself!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2013This is an excellent overview of the world of transgender transitioning. Ms. Boedecker 'lays it on the line', with clear, accessible information about what the world of transsexuality actually looks and feels like, and what 'crossing into the other gender' is really all about. She makes it clear (for anyone who didn't know this already) that the transition is no bowl of cherries, and that making the 'full transition' -- hormones, electrolysis, GRS, facial feminization surgery, etc. -- is a decision that needs a lot of thought before being entered and pursued. And she offers other options, should an individual chose not to 'go all the way', but stop at some clear 'way stations', which might feel equally as real and comfortable, without all the physical, emotional, sexual, and spiritual demands (or fulfillments, depending on ones perspective) that 'batting for the other team' entails. Highly recommended book!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2013This is perhaps the most comprehensive books I have read (and re-read! and taken notes in!) on transgender transition. It's not a narrative of one-person's experiences; it's a step-by-step handbook that a person can continue to refer to throughout his/her entire transtion. Using the metaphor of an "epic quest," Dr. Boedecker explains all facets of transition (for both MTF and FTM), from coming out to friends and family, relationships, fashion advice, all the way through to gender reassignment surgery... all with an objective point of view that does not judge or belittle the reader. She explains every step using easy to understand anecdotes from her own experiences as a therapist assisting gender dysphoric clients. Even if you are just looking to start your transition, or are in mid-transition (like me) and looking for validation for the next step in your quest, this is an incredible guidebook... a must read for the TG community and their allies!

This book was written a while back, but is still very relevant today. Lots of useful information and questions to guide you along the journey.
Whatever your journey is with regards to your gender, this will be a useful guide.
theRPReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 26, 20135.0 out of 5 stars A very good book for those who are considering transition
As a MtF transperson, I've read information on transition and transgenderism from a number of internet sites and gathered useful advice from these websites. This book does an excellent job at collecting this information into an accessible and, more importantly, comforting guidebook for those who are considering transiton (whether you are MtF or FtM, although this is written for the aspiring transwoman in mind).
In particular, I appreciated the chapters on self-acceptance, coming out and hair removal. This book stresses self-acceptance and patience with loved ones (it is their transition too), not only is it suitable for transgender people but also family and friends of those who are. Anne L. Boedecker writes in a style that indicates experience and consideration for treating patients in a human-centered approach.
I do have my criticisms about the book; the first being that not all of the chapters are hyperlinked which makes navigation a bit more difficult and I personally did not think enough was mentioned on self-medication (for some of us, it seems to be our only option and that is misunderstood).
Overall, I thought this book was extraordinarily helpful (more so than all those websites and chat forums I've been on) and it was worth the money.
Stephanie WyattReviewed in Canada on November 8, 20145.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to transition
An excellent, well written book. Highly recommended for TGs and their supporters. I wish that I had had a copy of this book when I started my journey all those years ago. If you are transitioning, or thinking about transitioning, read this book - and order a copy in print so that you can offer it to members of your support team. Contains lots of real world advice and helpful pointers - Anne clearly has many years of experience with real TG people and it shows in this book right from the start.
MaddieReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 20, 20135.0 out of 5 stars utterly wonderful book
I could not put this book down, within the first few pages it was as if I was talking with someone who knew me... Very well, I can't begin to say how accepted it made me feel

Excellent resource material, a little bit dated however in conjunction with her workbook a must read for all people considering MTF transition
