About the Author

Martine Rothblatt is responsible for launching several satellite communications companies, including the first nationwide vehicle location system (Geostar, 1983), the first private international spacecom project (PanAmSat, 1984), the first global satellite radio network (WorldSpace, 1990), and the first non-geostationary satellite-to-car broadcasting system (Sirius, 1990). As an attorney-entrepreneur she was also responsible for leading the efforts to obtain worldwide approval, via new international treaties, of satellite orbit/spectrum allocations for space-based navigation services (1987) and for direct-to-person satellite radio transmissions (1992). In the 1990s Dr. Rothblatt entered the life sciences field by leading the International Bar Association’s project to develop a draft Human Genome Treaty for the United Nations (submitted in 1999), and by founding a biotechnology company, United Therapeutics (1996). Dr. Rothblatt is the author of books on satellite communications technology (Radiodetermination Satellite Services and Standards, Artech, 1987), gender freedom (Apartheid of Sex, Crown, 1995), genomics (Unzipped Genes, Temple University Press, 1997) and xenotransplantation (Your Life or Mine, Ashgate House, 2003). She is also cyberscripted and produced one of the first cybermuseums, the World Against Racism Museum, www.endracism.org. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Martine Rothblatt's Apartheid of Sex, published in 1995, is the foundational text of the emerging Gender Rights movement. This book is an updated, second edition of the original. If you are not yet a Transhumanist, you may find the new material, which extends Martine's presentation beyond Transgender issues, to enter unfamiliar territory.

This will be recognized in the New Age as one of the most important books of the past century leading to the reformation of human society. Its prophetic vision is comparable to Theodore Sturgeon's much earlier (1960) Venus Plus X, which is fiction. This book is NOT FICTION.

I unflinchingly say that every person on earth should read and contemplate the message of this volume. Here you will find, elaborated in complete social, legal, and engineering detail, how a new, ethical, society of true equality can be built on the bones of our presently decayed one.

Most of the text of this book has been on-line for the past year or two. Simply Google the two words Transgender and Transhuman in the same query. The on-line version contains many graphics and illustrations that, while not required to understand the text, lighten the reading experience. Since the web publication is in the form of an extended blog, the printed book is easier to read and more complete.

This book is a must read for anyone who cares to seriously understand the critical factors driving the future of human social and personally directed evolution.

Interesting, but dated

The date on this is 2011; the original Apartheid of Sex was published in 1995. But honestly, the text should have been more thoroughly updated for 2011. Some of the language is already outdated for that time, as are some facts, e.g. the mention of Bowers v. Hardwick (1986) as the latest relevant decision on the subject of sodomy laws in the US (overturned in 2003's Lawrence v. Texas). It's still an interesting read, and some of this would have been groundbreaking in 1995, though I'm not sure which parts date from that year. As it is, I'd like to see another update in the context of even more "sex-blind marriage", the greater acceptance and current controversies regarding transgender people, non-binary people (i.e. the reality and current vocabulary behind some of the sex/gender possibilities Rothblatt describes), and where things might go from here on the transgender and transhuman fronts. Perhaps Rothblatt isn't the person to write that book, but I'd appreciate something similar from a similar mind, just looking ahead from 2017 instead of 1995 with uneven/incomplete 2011 updates.

I quite enjoyed this book. It made excellent argument and backed them up well. It was informative and interesting and inspiring.
However, my enjoyment (and my five star rating) of this book are held back by some rather serious issues with formatting. I don't know if they came about during the transition from the paper to digital formats, but throughout the book, there are a number of points where sections of text are randomly moved out of their proper place and to the bottom of the paragraph. Usually, if you're good with words, you can still figure out how to piece it together, but if I were to redo this purchase, I'd probably go for a hard copy. I may still get a hard copy one of these days, but I'll have to see it in person.

The book makes it clear that outdated definitions of and the emerging fluidness of "human-being" and "human-behavior" must be accompanied by a morality that allows us to retain the essence of what it has meant and will mean to be a moral being.

Indeed, what is human? That category has become broader with each passing decade. Thank you Martine for producing this wonderful book, for giving me the courage to not only make a stand as a transgender pre-everything male, but to consider electronic minds as my brothers and sisters, no less deserving of rights or love. Humanity needs more people like you.
