Man, oh man, that John Chase doesn't know the meaning of the word QUIT - Fast paced story that really interesting and engaging, the story is added to with Rachel and DOG. The world is ending and infected are everywhere. But Holy Smokes!!! what a ride - there is just enough military to let the reader know that Dirk Patton was military, but not enough to put you to sleep, It makes the story interesting.
I actually prefer the audiobook version so I can listen on the go and audiobooks 1-6 are fantastic.
Basic run down of the series is John Chase goes to Atlanta on business, the next day weird stuff starts happening. He sees Rachel running from infested through the swamp and saves her. The world goes to hell, John needs to get back to Phoenix, AZ to find his wife Katie. Along the way, John and Rachel find Dog and a whole bunch of infected and a bunch of Yahoos -
The characters are well developed and you feel that you really know them. As you read, you realize that no one is safe from either the infected, the bad guys outside the characters' circle, or the bad guys inside the circle. I love that there is more action than any other books I have read from start to finish....(well I don't think it ever "finishes") as you go from book to book. As John keeps looking to find and rescue his wife, you feel for Rachael who has been a major part of John's life since he rescued her in book 1.
When I started reading this series, I figured that I would get bored with it after the first 2 or 3 books and wondered how the author could possibly keep coming up with new situations for the characters that would be as exciting as the previous ones. Well, he does, and no situation is like any of the previous ones. I find myself hoping the characters can finally get a break. If you really look into the story line, the characters DO "get a break" as things tend to keep moving along with some successes. The "breaks" or so subtle and followed quickly by some potential disaster that you
don't see them unless you really look.
I would recommend these books to anybody that likes apocolyptic stories. You won't be disappointed.
So, I have now read the entire series and am more hooked than ever. This is a great series and I highly recommend it. I am now fully vested in what happens to these people and really dislike that I now HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!! But I will because I have to know how this turns out. Great author.
So, that was my review after reading this book. I have now read all of the books on my kindle, pre-ordered #8, purchased all of them in soft cover and even purchased the audio book from Audible. I am waiting for all of them to come to Audible because I love being read to. They do need a different narrator though. Am I obsessive? Just a wee bit. I have read the series 3 times so far and each time it gets better. The characters are believable and I truly care about them. John is a great person and still wants to find his wife. Rachel wants to survive with John. Dog? Well, Dog is just really cool. I cannot recommend this series enough. Yes, there is violence, some pretty graphic. But they are fighting infected people trying to eat them for God’s sake! If you cannot deal with very well described violence, or a lot of military scenes, then go elsewhere for your entertainment. I can't wait to read each book but then I’m distressed when I finish one.
You must read them in order. That is the only way you will understand the story line and the world that the characters are trying to live in. Most books end and the next picks up at that spot. Some scenes in the later books have brought tears to my eyes because I have grown to truly care about the people who inhabit this world.
I would recommend reading the John Chase story after reading at least one of the Voodoo books. This will allow you to get to know him a little in this current world and understand some of what has made him into the man that he has become. Other things will fall into place.
If you do not like “Zombies”. If you do not really care about “military” scenes, descriptions, etc. If you are not particularly fond of “apocalypse” stories please move on instead of leaving a bad review. I know that not everyone likes everything but just move on. Please, this author does not deserve it. Nor do these stories.

To see just how long I can function in the real world without sleep.
Action packed , pretty relentless infected, sorry I mistakenly called them zombies in an earlier review. These infected have way more scary skills.
All the characters are evolving at a steady pace.Sorry to lose some of the good folk, but BIG YAY when the bad folk get their just deserts.
I'll keep going because it's a different take on the usual apocalyptic book, which makes it fresh and keeps me interested.
Of course that would all change should any travesty happen to 🐕.I love him the most.
This series keeps on getting better and it was already fantastic from the beginning. Great characters that you feel for and share their pain and happiness. This is the best zombie/infected series on the market by a long way and I have read most of them! All I can say is "roll on book 6"
