Editorial Reviews

Eccentric hip-hop standout A$AP Ferg will release his A$AP Worldwide/Polo Grounds Music Trap Lord project across select digital and physical retailers on August 20th, 2013. Trap Lord will include the spring breakout hit "Work REMIX" featuring A$AP Rocky, French Montana, Trinidad James & ScHoolBoy Q, as well as the new single "Shabba," also featuring A$AP Rocky. On July 30th, "Hood Pope," one of several tracks from the long-awaited release, will be available for purchase.

Selected as one of the "Most Anticipated Albums of Summer 2013" by lifestyle publication Complex.com, The 13-song Trap Lord includes special guest appearances by hip-hop legends Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony, Onyx, and B-Real (from Cypress Hill), with additional appearances by Waka Flocka Flame and Aston Matthews.

With recognition by Rollingstone.com as an "Artist to Watch" within the A$AP Mob, and a bold verse on "Ghetto Symphony," a track on the deluxe version of A$AP Rocky's chart-topping debut album LONG.LIVE.A$AP, the melodic wordsmith A$AP Ferg has set the path for a promising 2013. His recent smash record "Work" was cited as "…one of the year's breakout anthems" by The New York Times and this past spring, he was the opening act on "Bandz A Make Her Dance" rapper Juicy J sold-out "Stay Trippy Tour." Recently, A$AP Ferg kicked-off the summer by delivering a electrifying performance at this year's BET Awards 106 & Park pre-show.

I'm a fan of A$AP Rocky, and when I heard about this album I honestly wasn't too intrigued. I've heard A$AP Ferg on A$AP Mob - Lords Never Worry. For the most part I thought that mixtape was terrible. Ferg didn't catch my ear at all. Then I heard Hood Pope, Shabba, and the Work Remix over the summer before this album was released. It had me interested to say the least. Ferg has a clear Bone Thugs influence in his music. It's music you can vibe to, have in the background, cruise to, workout to.

It starts out with a super ignorant song called 'Let It Go'. Sure it's all about letting a gun go, spraying relentlessly, but does anyone take it that seriously? It's music. Sometimes ego music is nice. This album has a few of those tracks if that's your thing. I would even say the next song 'Shabba' classifies as ego tripping music. As a direct quote from the hook "Sha Shabba Ranks Sha Sha Shabba Ranks 8 gold rings like I'm Sha Shabba Ranks". It's catchy if you couldn't tell already.

The album has a few nice features as well. As mentioned before A$AP Ferg is clearly a Bone-Thugs-n-Harmony fan. The song 'Lord' features them, and it's everything you thought it would be. Supreme flow, a laid back beat, hard lyrics. You'll even hear Ferg with a Bone Thugs esque flow.
Other notable features include Schoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Trinidad James on the 'Work Remix'.

There are plenty of tracks that stand out on this 13 track album. 'Hood Pope' has a smooth yet dark feel where Ferg paints a picture of himself as a pope in his hood. Where he is a trap lord that watches over his people. It also talks about how he's having to fight off demons.
'Fergivicious' also speaks about the pain he's enduring or was enduring. '4:02' has a Kid CuDi feel to it.

Honestly I wasn't super impressed with A$AP Rocky's album from earlier this year, but something about this album really got to the inner hip hop fan in me. He's from the East Coast, but there are some prominent 90's dirty south and LA gangsta rap influences in here, and a couple of mellower, trippier songs too. If you're into agressive hip hop I highly recommend checking this album out

Okay, so there's clearly one thing people don't understand about the A$AP Mob, I think, and that is that it seems like it is all just parody and I think A$AP Ferg's Trap Lord is absolutely proof enough. Between hilarious punchlines and fantastic beats with a good flow, it will definitely catch you on first listen that Ferg isn't taking this whole thing too seriously, just seriously enough to be considered serious. But the more you listen to him (and label mate A$AP Rocky), the more you realize that all this isn't meant to be taken too seriously. I mean really, if you need an example of the humor of it all, listen to the song "Shabba". I mean really, both Ferg and Rocky deliver hilarious verses over the sickest trap beat I have heard in a long time. This is rap comedy done well, much like RiFF RAFF. And the album is actually good, a lot of the beats are extremely catchy, the punchlines delivered from Ferg grab attention and make the album fun to listen to. But the album does have times where the comedy falls a part a little, and then Ferg's singing is easily a low point throughout the album, but really, all and all, the album, no matter how you look at it, whether it be from the comedy value standpoint or the party rap value standpoint, it's solid. It will get you hyped up and it is a fun listen and I don't think I can stress that enough. Stop taking everything so serious and have some fun, because this album gives you it in droves.

Ferg brings the heat with his debut LP. I always liked him from the start when I heard his verse on ASAP Rocky's "Kissin' Pink" back in 2011. The beats on this thang go in. The guest rappers all brought the heat. That Work Remix is crazy. Let It Go, Shabba, Hood Pope, Fergavicious are all crazy tracks. Something different. You got to check this album out for yourself, but you won't be disappointed. Ferg is the truth.

Trap Lord was originally supposed to be a mixtape, but Ferg changed it to an album instead. I know A$AP Mob released their Lords Never Worry mixtape last year, but a solo mixtape from Ferg would of been dope so we could of got an idea of how his music would sound. "Work Remix" featuring ASAP Rocky, French Montana, Trinidad James & Schoolboy Q is the first song I've heard from him, so I'm still new to his music. The second single "Shabba" featuring A$AP Rocky produced by Snugsworth is inspired by none of than the Mr Loverman himself, Shabba Ranks. Ferg said the song came about from them playing around in the studio.

The funny thing about this song is that every time I think of Shabba, I think of that parody called Mr Ugly Man that Marlon Wayans did on the classic sitcom In Living Color Lol, anyway It's dope, its your typical trap beat song with a catchy hook. Bone Thugs bring their rapid fire flow to "Lord" and Ferg holds his own. I like to see things like this, when the new generation does a song with the artist they were influenced by, that's what I call paying homage. At the end of the song Bizzy says a prayer. The Bone influence is all throughout Trap Lord, its most evident on the uplifting "Hood Pope". Ferg shows some versatility and goes into a sing-songy flow over Veryrvre's laid back production.

The spaced out "Fergivicious" and "F*** Out My Face" featuring Onyx, B-Real and Aston Matthews keeps the album momentum going. The sinister "Murda Something" features Waka, and its easily the most aggressive song on Trap Lord. Waka even uses a different flow and sounds more focused than usual. "Cocaine Castle" is about people using drugs to escape the pain and how the demons can get the best of them, once again Ferg steps outside the box and it worked.
