Review

Injured in a brutal attack and uncertain whether she still can perform as an ER nurse, Riley Hale hopes for reinstatement while serving as a chaplain, offering comfort and prayers to patients at Alamo Grace Hospital, the setting for a new series from Calvert (Mercy Hospital series). To hone her skills, Riley volunteers at a clinic run by daredevil doctor Jack Travis, who battles his mysterious past―and hostile neighbors seeking to shut down the clinic, which brings clientele to the community considered “undesirable.” A budding romance between Riley and Jack is nicely balanced by the couple’s interactions with family, patients, and co-workers, all toting their own baggage packed with fear, ulterior motives, and past mistakes. Calvert, herself a former ER nurse who was sidelined by an injury, infuses her story with detailed medical procedures and terminology along with honest questions about faith that anyone might ask in the face of difficulties. The characters are likable and receive rich and thorough development in this enjoyable “hope opera” page-turner. (Publishers Weekly)

Candace Calvert is no stranger to all things medical and writing. Her first series of books―the Mercy Hospital series―have such titles as Critical Care, Disaster Status and Code Triage. And Trauma Plan gives an eye-opening look behind the scenes of the world of emergency medicine. In this advanced reader’s copy presented by Tyndale House Publishers, this reviewer became so entranced in the story that was being told―or should I say stories that were sewn together as uniquely and beautifully as a quilt top by Calvert who proves to be a wordsmith for the common everyday folks―that three and half hours later, the book was finished and I was hungry for more.

Very seldom does a book do that for this old newspaper editor, but Calvert’s Trauma Plan did that. Riley Hale was a nurse and a good one before she was the victim of an attack that not only physically damaged her, but took a chunk out of her confidence. Dr. Jack Travis had experienced enough heartache in his life to make even Mother Teresa understand his unwillingness to get close to people or trust them. Yet, Dr. Travis devotes his life to helping the underdog with a free medical clinic next door to a posh neighborhood. Riley Hale wants to go back into nursing, but for now has to be satisfied as a safety officer and chaplain at the very hospital she was attacked at.

Through an ironic twist of fate, or perhaps it really was the hand of God, Dr. Travis and Chaplain Hale meet, don’t hit it off, but end up needing each other to accomplish their individual professional goals. It is the bits and pieces of the other stories and characters that Calvert delicately and subtly (at the same time) twines together that makes Trauma Plan the type of book that you want to read over and over.

It is a book not just for medical personnel―but for everyone. George Clooney would probably take on another doctor’s role after reading this book. (examiner.com)

Calvert is an ER nurse who brings the reader not only a great romantic story, but a glimpse into the chaos of an urban medical clinic. Trauma Plan is a humor-filled romance, woven throughout with suspense, medical intrigue, and faith. Readers will look forward to the rest of the Grace Medical series.

Riley Hale (of the rich and famous Hale family) wants to work as an ER nurse again, but injuries from a savage attack have left permanent damage, and she cannot control her muscle spasms. Dr. Jack Travis is a passionate champion of the homeless and the downtrodden. When he meets Riley he is wary of her limitations but intrigued by her determination, and he asks her to help at the clinic. Riley sees this as a chance to get back into medicine and accepts. They become a strong team battling for those who have no voice.―Linda Mae Baldwin (Romantic Times)

What is it about this medical suspense genre that I love so much? And Candace Calvert in particular! Perhaps it's because I feel like she combines the drama (medical and personal!) of shows like ER or Grey's Anatomy with realistic characters, sweet romance, and intriguing mysteries--all against a backdrop of faith. Trauma Plan is no exception.

Riley desperately wants to return to her former duties as an ER trauma nurse. However, injuries have sidelined her and she feels "stuck" in her job as ER chaplain. When Dr. Jack Travis gives her an opportunity to prove herself and hone her skills at his free clinic, she reluctantly accepts his offer. Between the community trying to shut the clinic down and the tension between Riley and Jack, sparks are flying everywhere! As they get to know each other, a fragile trust forms--and is jeopardized when Jack's past comes out.

Wow. Candace Calvert delivers again in Trauma Plan. Riley and Jack were fantastic characters, and I loved getting both of their perspectives throughout the book. Candace does a great job of creating flawed characters that are likeable yet real. The secondary characters in this novel were excellent as well and at times stole the show. Bandy, the formerly homeless man who helps at the shelter, and his gimpy dog Hobo were wonderful additions to this cast of characters. While the book wasn't as suspenseful as I expected, the romance and faith elements were strong and it worked out to be the perfect mix.

As always I highly recommend this Candace Calvert novel and look forward to reading more in this series! [5 stars]

The evidence of a good book is generally in how quickly one feels compelled to read it. The quicker the better - even though it is bitter sweet to reach the end, you still can't wait to get there.

This is the second title and a start of a new series, that I have read of Candace Calvert's novels. Reinventing the adrenaline and action of ER and other dramatic hospital dramas, Trauma Plan had plenty of gritty action to keep the pulse pounding and just enough mystery to keep avid page turning a must.

Hospital ER Chaplain (and registered nurse) Riley Hale is desperately trying to regain her position as a fully able ER nurse after suffering a horrific attack that left her severely injured and jeopodise her ability to do her job. Enter ER doc Jackson Travis - who is single-handedly directing a small clinic to serve the poor and homeless of the area, much to the opposition of the swanky residence who would rather then clinic be anywhere but there back door.

The two initially clash but both need the other - Jack, to have the Hale name (Rily's family have influence) on his clinic and Riley to regain her confidence and have a endorcement that she can return to the job she loves.

Along with the two leads, we meet a wonderful group of supporting characters who flesh out the world of this Texan town. From Bandy, the crusty old rodeo man with his little dog with his wheeled cart he pulls behind him, to Kate - Riley's coworker who no doubt will appear in further titles (I hope).

The story, while having a typlical romantic pattern also through up enough mystery and questions - especially around Jack and his secret past that I personally didn't see the revelation coming. The ending also has a few shocking moments befitting a medical romantic drama.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves their medical fiction with a high dose of romance and a fantastic message that shine through the whole thing. I can't wait for the next title.

These characters along with many more add to the charm of the story.

Can trust issues be overcome, and can fear be tackled without leaving a scar?

This is the first book I have had to opportunity to read by Mrs Calvert, and I can honestly say it won't be the last. Reminiscent of ER this medical style fictional drama with it's personable and memorable characters the reader can relate and attach to, is a real page turner and extremely hard to put down. I quickly became lost in this book which is peppered with action, romance, heartbreak and some laugh aloud moments promising many enjoyable reading hours. Dialogue and scenery seemed realistic, plot flowed smoothly and character development was strong. I was entertained and challenged in my faith. I would highly recommend this book to others. I received this complimentary copy from Tyndale Publishers for my review.
