So I moved on to a thinner, more transportable journal with thicker guidelines (this one). I believe it fits a number of leather sheaths, but I like the craft paper look, feel, and weight. I also like that the whole book is long and thin, which makes packing it simple and not at all annoying. The pages are reasonably thick- I've used ink gel and simple ink pens (no ballpoints, though), and I haven't had any trouble with bleeding.
There are not a lot of pages in these notebooks, so if you're looking in something to journal in for more than a few months, move along. If you get tired of journals (why was that so sloppy? why do I have to turn sooo far back in the book to get to my present place? that was a bad day, I don't want to see that one again...), this is pretty great. I *do* wish that the grid were smaller than it is, but overall, it's one of my favorite books for journaling in a while for a reasonable price.
I'm brand new to the whole traveler's notebook world so I will say upfront that I don't have much to compare these too. I don't own a Midori or Midori paper at the moment.
However, the paper - which is a soft cream color and has a very pleasant texture to the touch - seems to be at least somewhat resistant to bleeding/ghosting. I tried writing something with a Papermate Flair pen and there was barely any discernible sign of it on the reverse - and this is me standing under an large overhead light.
Also, for anyone who - like me - is averse to strong smells, I was happy to find absolutely NONE on this product (both in shrink-wrap and once wrapping was removed). By contrast, I bought a slip-in card insert from Webster's Pages that reeked so profoundly of toxic chemicals that I banished it to the garage for a few days before I was able to use it.
All in all I would say that this is exceptionally good value for money at a hair under $3 per notebook. I would love to see this company make some with white paper as well, or maybe a sketchbook version with thicker paper. I think that, especially for people who are just trying out the whole concept of traveler's notebooks, it's an excellent product. We'll see how it hold up to daily use!
