This is an odd collection. The title story is (obviously) about a traveling dildo salesman. His name is Ralph, at least he thinks it is, and the only thing he is actually sure about is that he needs to sell his products. He has almost no memory of anything else, even things that just happened. He just knows that once he sells all of his products he will be able to get all of the answers he needs.
Milky Agitation is an odd, light story.
Two-Way Santa (seen also in Carlton Mellick's Christmas on Crack) is about - how shall I put this? - it's about a man with a fetish for the homeless.
The Helen Mower made me feel uncomfortable, whether that is good or bad, I'm not sure.
Living Room Zombies was my second favorite in the collection. It's a different take on the zombie apocalypse. How would stoners deal with the undead?
Revenge of the Living Masturbation Rag is about exactly what the title implies.
This is a great collection. Pure Kevin L Donihe. I think it could also work as a good starting point for someone new to Kevin Donihe's work, and also to Bizarro. Highly recommended for some gross-out, sticky laughs.
Ralph is a salesman, he doesn't remember his past or why he does it, all he does is go from door to door selling "impliments" supposedly made in Heaven. One day while walking through a new area he begins to see clues about his existence hidden in simple things such as grass and groups of ants. With each new customer he begins to realize the truth about his life and why he is who he is leading to a slam bang confrontation with God and the truth behind his existence.
I know what you are thinking, "Steve this book is about... you know... so there is probably going to be a lot of sex!" No such thing, while another story on this book has some sexual content(The disturbing Two-Way Santa) this story which begins the book is in fact quite funny. Don't believe me? I dare you to read the first sale Ralph makes to a housewife and not laugh.
This book also contains odd stories about a homeless Santa, a half woman half lawnmower hybrid, two men during a zombie apocalypse a dirty rag who becomes sentient, all for the reader to peruse and go "What the Heck" over.
Donihe does these topics with style and grace, making the sleaze seem eloquent and fun at the same time. I couldn't get over how great this book was.
Pick up this book today and remember that the eye in the sky is watching you
This book took all prior conceptions about the work of Mr. Donihe, and stomped them into the ground.
The Traveling [Woman Pleasuring Device] Salesman is a surreal, almost Lynchian story that stands alongside Cameron Pierce's work in terms of emotional connection. Ralph, our friendly neighborhood sex toy salesman, is a character I maintained an empathetic relationship the whole ride with. When he was sad, I was sad. When things turned around, I cheered for his victories. I went on this journey with Ralph, and loved every moment of it.
Included in this book are also five more flash stories that provided some good chuckles and mood, but the main event was the title novella. Highly recommended.
Subtle, it ain’t. Many, many other things, however, it is. Hilarious and baffling to begin with, but before you realize what’s happening, you’ve wandered into a bleak and maddening existential nightmare. With dildos, but, their involvement is far less erotic romp and far more along the lines of the stuff you see online where people ‘open carry’ or mail boxes of dicks.
The second half of the book is rounded out with five short stories, some of which do involve sex … if of rather strange sorts … lawnmower fetish isn’t something one often hears about. “Milky Agitation” and “Revenge of the Living Masturbation Rag” both manage to pack worlds of weird into a mere two pages each.
Definitely an entertaining read, not to mention a great gift or something to buy extra copies of and leave around in surprising locations for unsuspecting passers-by!
