This Cd rocked my world upon hearing it for the first time! Melton Mustafa is a Trumpet Journey man who has been around for quite some time, though most have probably never heard of him! He has played with Bobby Watson among others and upon hearing his composition " Last Chance to Groove " off Bobby's Post Motown Bop release, I knew this guy was not only a great voice on the trumpet, but a master composer as well! After listening to his performance on Bobby's recording I decided I needed to check out some of his solo work and am so glad that I did as it stands out as some of the best work I have heard in recent memory! The Saxophonist on this date was a Junior in High School at the time this music was recorded and his name is Patrick Bartley! Why neither of these men are not a household name is beyond me! The samples to this album can be heard by clicking on the MP3 button and the talent is definitely there and cannot be denied! Do yourself a favor and pick this one up now and you can thank yourself later! FIVE STARS!!!

Trumpeter Melton Mustafa delivers 9 solid compositions in the modern jazz idiom, ranging from a Miles like ballad (I Remember Yesterday) to cutting edge post bop (Center of the Circle) to a straight ahead burner (The Traveling Man) while an occasional latin flavor seeps into some other tunes. In addition to Melton's own excellent playing, he introduces us to the fiery young altoist Patrick Bartley and is supported by a veteran rhythm section that includes the late great pianist Mulgrew Miller (Dig his solo on Transition). 77:52 of music.

More I listen to this record, more I in view and appreciate the subtleties. Trumpeter Melton Mustafa, Miami Gardens man, reminds us that jazz exists also in Miami. Melton resides in this city, and he taught there after a career that has led him to play with, among others, Jaco Pastorius, the
Count Basie Orchestra
or
Bobby Watson
. In this album not atmosphere latino or trendy, or lazing on the beaches, but rather a side tornado. Melton Mustafa brings together mainly encountered friends when he played with Bobby Watson. Beautiful world met Mulgrew Miller piano (disappeared since); Essiet Essiet on bass; Victor Lewis on drums, Jason Jackson trombone, Ray Mantilla on percussion and benjamin Patrick Bartley.
A record to the very torrid start, a "Travelling man" at a boiling hot hell train that highlights the very young saxophonist Patrick Bartley (which it must be the first record) and it'll certainly talk about (seen already on the internet in September 2013 play with Wynton Marsalis). Nine compositions dense, very original, Melton. A very beautiful ballad "I remember Yesterday" where you appreciate its soft velvety sound of trumpet. A beautiful dialogue bass percussion in «Center of the citcle» intro Quite happy to finish 'Mo Bop' piece. A disc recorded in 2010, including the release has been delayed (late 2012) by cancer that he managed to overcome. In the Mustafa family I ask son Melton R. producer Executive; wife Zakiyyah which label Zaki. There are also the other musicians sons and brother, saxophonist Jesse Jones Jr. Found the family in this album in big-band with an interesting “St Louis Blues”. Five stars for encouraging self-generation of quality.

Awesome CD!!! The Traveling Man is a great CD Featuring The Great Trumpeter and Count Basie Alumni Melton Mustafa and the very young but super talented saxophonist Patrick Bartley. They both play incredible solos and are backed up by some of the best in the business; Mulgrew Miller, Victor Lewis and Essiet
