What happen when your heart and your head telling you different things?

love made no sense. It was cold and hard and didn't care how much it hurt you.

By the first few pages, I was hooked. The story took you on a magical ride and I felt like I lost in the carnival and on the front seat of a roller coaster ride.

"And you're at a crossroads. You're wondering which way to go - towards safety, or towards love."

From the moment Aimee met Kes she knew loving him won't be easy. He's too difficult, too dangerous, too unrestrained and wild. But often our heart won over our head.

The story makes you follow their journey from childhood into adulthood where life throws them a lot of twist and turn. Their relationship wasn't smooth sailing. Too many obstacles and how different their world apart. So when life offers second chance what would you do?

The struggles and emotions of Aimee and Kes's love makes you torn.

love isn't enough

It's been a while since if felt this way about a story. Jane's writing makes you really feels all the emotions and open your eyes to carnival life. It's a story that truly conflicted you between going what your heart feels and what your head tells you. Jane is amazingly playing with all your emotion all over this one. And just like that it's not just a simple love story.

The last time I felt this way when she successfully make me disregards all the things I would normally hate in a book and ended up loving the education of Sebastian and Caroline.

I can't recommend this book enough and can't wait for the sequel and see where she will takes us with the Kes and Aimee's journey.

I love! Love! Love this so hard.

5 magical stars and beyond!!

I have read several books by this author, and she is amazing; her plots are always well thought out, and her characters are unique and real, and this one was no different. I loved the first half of this read, when Aimee and Kes were building their bond and the precious connection they had as children. But the emotion, turmoil, misunderstandings and angst that followed was too much for me and almost overshadowed the relationship between our two main characters. There were times that I felt that Aimee was more immature and childish than Kes, but I know that love can make us do crazy, childish things. Kes has a hard time verbalizing his feelings, and not knowing more of his background and pain, it's hard to know where all his issues stem from, but it is easy to see why he is broken. I invested so much in this story, that the ending just left me deflated. Yes, it knew that this is a serial read, but I was emotionally drained and frustrated. I have no idea how this will all play out, but I need to try and capture those precious childhood ideals that made me fall in love with the youthful Aimee and Kes, because the adult versions have me feeling a bit apathetic and annoyed. I hope that part 2 will help me recapture the "magic" of the carnie and the couple who initially captured my heart.

“You’ve been sprinkled with fairy dust, missy. The carnival is in your blood now."

On Aimee’s 10th birthday all she wants is to go to the traveling carnival that has taken up residence across from her house. From her bedroom window she can she the Ferris wheel, rides, and games and much to her parents dislike, she wants nothing more than to experience something different.

“I was old enough to know that magic didn’t exist, and young enough to hope that I was wrong. I was sure that if magic belongs anywhere in the world, it was living and breathing right across the road in Mr. Peterson’s field.”

Unknowingly, this is the day that would change Aimee’s life forever. This is the day she meets Kes, a boy the same age as her who is “carnival royalty.” His grandfather runs everything and Kes and his older brother are performers in the main attraction. The day they meet, the pair sneaks off, Kes showing off many behind the scenes wonders to Aimee, who is completely enraptured from minute one.

"Kes gave me his shy smile again and my heart was captured from that moment. I didn’t know it then; I didn’t understand what it meant, but whenever I looked at him, my skin felt warm, like my own personal sun was shining just for me."

So, every year for two weeks in the summer, Aimee and Kes are inseparable. What begins as a childhood friendship and innocent crush turned into a passionate first love as they grow into teens.

“I’ll come back next year.”
“I’ll wait for you.”

From the get go I had that excited, indescribable feeling while reading. Usually when I see characters as kids I just want it to hurry up so we can get to the “good stuff,” but that was definitely not the case here. It was ALL the good stuff.

This was such a magical book, I got so caught up in the descriptions and atmosphere of the carnival. It was one of those books where you really feel part of the story. We start off when Aimee is ten years old and for the first time ever, to the disparage of half of the community, the carnival is coming to her small town of Fairmont. It is her birthday wish and manages to persuade her parents to take her to see the wonders of the fair. Here she meets Kes, a carnie boy and her life is changed forever.

"I couldn't tell you why the carnival lured me with its sticky fingers and bright, whirling colors, except to say that it was different, and that excited me."

They form a connection straight away, Kes is free and wild and hard-working, Aimee just feels ordinary but she has a heart of gold and refuses to judge the new people she has met. For two weeks every year in summer when Kes comes to town, they have adventures and Aimee learns that life beyond her boring house with her strict parents and the small minded townspeople, can be full of colour and laughter and fun.

As they get older, it's clear that their childhood feelings are turning into something stronger and we experience the turmoil they face when they have to leave each other again, but when they turn 16 they make a decision that doesn't work out quite how they expected it to.

This leads us into the second part of the book in which they are adults. This is where the tension and angst really kick in and you are rooting for their second chance. Kes is an enigma, one minute he can be broody and frustrated with the world, and the next he can be the sweetest sexiest man that you can't help but fall in love with.
