About the Author

Richard George Adams (born 9 May, 1920) is an English novelist best known as the author of Watership Down. He originally began telling the story of Watership Down to his two daughters, and they insisted he publish it as a book. When finally published, it sold over a million copies in record time in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Watership Down has become a modern classic and won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize in 1972. Others of Richard’s books include Shardik, Maia, Tales from Watership Down, The Girl in a Swing and The Plague Dogs, the last two of which, together with Watership Down, have been filmed. His goal is to tell a good story, ideally one so good you can't put it down! Richard Adams currently lives in Hampshire, England. He has written about his childhood and youth, including the time he served in the army in World War II, in 'The Day Gone By'.

An interesting view of the events of the War Between the States, this story is told by Robert E. Lee's horse and best friend, "Traveler". At times light-hearted and at others sad and horrifying, this book describes in detail the major battles, the decision making process for Lee and helps the reader to understand Lee's feelings of inadequacy and his immense dislike of war. Being a horse owner/trainer myself, I was touched by Traveler's description of the bond and trust between himself and Lee and his pride in serving his owner/friend. I firmly believe that horses respond to kindness but firmness and especially wantneed to be allowed to maintain their own dignity. This book gave me everything I enjoy in a story - lots of historical fact and plenty of warm fuzzies.

This is the story of Robert E. Lee's famous horse as told by himself. Richard Adams has done a masterful job of interpreting for us humans the perceptions and emotions of a brave, intelligent creature who doesn't always understand the sometimes horrific events that he has experienced. It's a story of war, but much more it is a story of love. If you love animals, if you are a history buff, or if you simply love a good story well told, this book is for you. And if you have tears in your eyes as you read the final paragraph, it's not my fault. You have been warned.

i have read a lot of CIvil War history but i have never read a book like this. It was not just a book but it was an experience. I am also a horse lover and i know that the bond between rider and horse is very deep and powerful. This book entered into areas where no other author has ever tread. It is basicaly the story of the Confederate Army of Northern Va as told thru the eyes of the famous Traveller, the most brave and beloved horse of Robert E Lee. It is the story of their intimate relationship, his leadership, and the powerful saga of this most tragic time in American history. In this novel we all meet and come to know other famous horses such as Little Sorrel who carried his master Stonewall Jackson to his many great victorys. It is a story of hope and courage, love and loss. A most powerful book and a must read!

While I have been a follower of Watership Down since it was published, this year I started finding used copies of Adams' books whenever I went to used book stores or thrift shops. I picked up Shardik & Maia & found them to be what good fantasy should strive to be. They were theologically & spiritually demanding & made the same impression on me Tolkien did the first time I read LoTR (in 1964). Being a southerner both by birth & inclination, I decided to hunt for Traveller as soon as I found it existed. I finally gave up the search & turned to Amazon & I'm glad I did. The book is a wonderful interior study of General Lee & narrates the story of the War (Between the States) in the way it isn't often told. It is a story from the sweat & starvation side of the war & leaves out the vainglorious pageantry (there wasn't any). While now & again it's hard to follow since Traveller seldom uses the names of humans involved in the story but only identifies them by descriptions, the story is perfect as told. I will recommend this book to whoever is interested in that period of history. I will NOT give this copy away. The vendor went out of their way to make sure I received my book & while it was misplaced between Atlanta & the Appalachians, it got here in excellent condition as described.

I first read this in jr high. I loved it and couldn't believe so few people had heard of it. After Richard Adams died I decided to get a copy for my Little Free Library. I re-read it and loved it all over again. I'm going to have to order another copy for my LFL because I want a copy for myself. Better World Books was wonderful. The copy they sold me is in great condition and it was very inexpensive. This book is not another Watership Down with horses instead of rabbits. It is its own fantastic story that will appeal to readers from upper elementary to adults.

Amusing, Though Slightly Inccurate, Telling

It is always interesting to see a British take on our American war. In all, this is a very well-researched novel written in the usual excellent literary style of Richard Adams. There were a few facts mentioned that I was not aware of in the first few pages. However, I could not help but notice an occasional slip-up. For instance, there is a reference to Gen. Hood in the Wilderness, which was not the case. Also, his occasional use of an Anglicism where no 19th-century American would say such a thing is somewhat jarring (i. e. 'mates' where we would say 'friends'). But it was an overall amusing account of the war from the viewpoint of Gen. Lee's horse.
