At first glance this bag looks great, ample room, fits in overhead bins on every airline and nice long handle for this tall guy.
The laptop sleeve on the front is great.
The wheels are so so, not huge fan of the redesigned magnetic wheels, the bag has a tendency to roll away on the slightest inclines.
The small pocket on top is also just OK, it's a little too deep and things get lost in it and it's hard to find stuff .
The bad news, the zipper broke after 6 weeks and now I am dealing with the lousy customer. (see photo)
One of the metal zipper pieces on the main compartment snapped off when I was packing at home. The metal on closer inspection is very porous and poorly cast. The pull tab is now unattached and it's very difficult to open and close the bag.
Customer service is not good. The want me to send a bag from California to Florida via Fedex Ground which will cost me $45. Then they "will determine" if the bag is defective and let me know what it will cost to have it fixed, if they decide it is somehow my fault.
I sent them pictures of the break and the original receipt from Amazon, there should be no question at this point that the piece is defective.
The other option they gave me is to find a shop, drive there, drop off the bag and then wait until that places decides if it's a warranty issue, then drive back and pick it up. The nearest shop is 20 miles from my house.
Terrible service on a new bag.
I did not like how the wheels catch on curbs or uneven ground and had to turn it like a two-wheel, but once you figure out how to maneuver it, it works great.
There are so many different pockets and storage areas which is great when you are traveling. It fits great in the overhead, but not underneath the seats. My kids are asking for one now.
The handle that pulls up at different levels is very sturdy and I had a smaller carry-on bag that fits over the handle and prevents it from slipping and falling when moving the bag.
I could roll in down the aisle on the plane of a 737 without any issues.
I bought my daughter a cheaper version and the wheels would not stay lined up, My bag did not have any issues and worked perfectly!
The bonus garment bag really works well and fits in the bottom of the bag.
In my opinion, the 'weakest link' in any rolling luggage is the wheels. It's therefore the most important issue when shopping for rolling luggage. Unless the wheels and axles are well designed and constructed for durability, they will be what fails first. My cheapo 6-7 year old 2-wheeler from a chain store developed wobbly wheels last time I used it indicating imminent failure.
I chose this Travelpro case based on rave reviews and what looked like a very durable wheel system. When it arrived, the first thing I looked at was the wheels. Having 'dualies' helps distribute the weight as well as divides individual axle loads, thereby increasing life span. I think if one wheel or axle breaks, the other wheel of the 'dualie' will continue to work fine. What's more interesting is that each wheel assembly is attached to what looks like an easily replaceable plastic mounting 'plate' should a wheel or rolling problem every arise.
I rate this case as outstanding in almost all categories. Of course, the wheel system is tops! Being able to roll it sideways in a straight line works very well, too. I'm not sure if it's magnets or some kind of hidden detents in the swivel mechanism that keeps them straight, but they work well. Overall, the construction is what can only be described as 'beefy' and should be able to withstand the 'savage baggage handlers' of TV commercials 30 years ago. But I didn't buy this bag to check it at the counter. I have no doubt whatsoever this will be the last bag of this size I will ever buy.
The fabric it's made of is thicker and seems more durable than that of the cheapo bag it replaces. The zippers are also beefy. The interior is surprisingly roomy, and the included 2-fold garment bag a works surprisingly well, too. Having handles top, bottom, and on one side makes it easily carry-able in any orientation. Being able to slide my 17" laptop in the outside front pocket was what clinched the deal for me.
I have only a couple of 'nit picks' about the case. First is the too-small zippered pocket directly behind the laptop pocket. I managed to get perhaps 10 folded sheets of 8.5"x11" paper in there after the bag was packed and the laptop zippered in. Perhaps that's its intent, to hold a minimal amount of paperwork, such as tickets. My only other nit-pick is that the expansion gusset is only from the bottom of the case almost to the top of the front section, where the gusset goes to zero. So if you're forced to pack it really full, put the excess at the bottom. I also have zero use for the USB cell phone recharge capability & battery compartment, but I'm sure some users will be happy to have it.
Should I need additional rolling luggage, Travelpro will definitely be the first, and probably last brand I look at. I've already recommended the brand to a couple of friends, too!
