1. 24" expandable is better than 26"
2. Don't spend a lot of money on checked luggage. If you fly enough, eventually your suitcase is going to get run over by a truck and paying $800 isn't going to save it.
I can't imagine needing a bigger bag. I'm the kind of person who tends to pack on the lighter side anyways and having the option to make it a little smaller or unzip the expansion when I need it is awesome. I've never seen anyone check a 28" case that wasn't over 40 lbs. So far I've taken it on three round-trip flights and it shows very little signs of wear. The wheels seem much more solid than a lot of other bags I watch people drag through the airport. The handle operation is fantastic.
The last thing is I'll say that Travelpro's customer service is pretty awesome. After my last flight when I noticed that the zipper pulls for the front pocket were gone. I was a little disappointed because I haven't had the bag for very long. I called Travelpro and the CSR explained that those pulls are designed with an extra gap in them. Pulls apparently get stuck in luggage conveyors all the time so these are supposed to pull off the bag because that keeps it from ripping the whole thing open. She's sending me a half dozen replacements so I can fix this one and have a few extras in case it happens again in the future. Really cool.
I'm getting the 22" equivalent for carry-on/gate-check.
BUT the zipper on the main compartment works only with difficulty. To get the zipper to go around the corners of the bag requires lots of tries and re-tries--lots of patience--a certain amount of hand-strength.
However, my wife took some time to align the zipper, and was able to get it to work.
Nevertheless, this is something that TravelPro could do better.
Also, the packaging on this suitcase wasn't very good. Flimsy.
The downside of this suitcase is its zippers. On our first trip together, a zipper on one of the front pockets busted, rendering it virtually useless. Worse, on each of my last two trips, the tab from one of the two main zippers sheared off, leaving little stumps with which to open and close the large, primary compartment. That's now very difficult to do, especially when the bag is fairly full.
My advice? Look elsewhere. Travelpro is a reputable brand and I have another one of their soft cases that's built to take some serious abuse. Unfortunately, this one isn't.
