Lord Hadley Blanchard is a resolute rake of the worst order, he is dishonorable and something of a parasite, living off the largess of others to include his father’s deceased broke wife, and when his step mama comes up with a plan to garner to money for the both of them he is on board. He will seduce a rich innocent, marry her and he will be set for life.
Mary has lost her father and has lived her life in the pastoral English Countryside. Suddenly the guardian appointed by her father wants her to marry an aristocrat and he whisks her to London right into the clutches of his mistress who is to be her chaperone. It is none other than Hadley’s wicked stepmother.
Mary is very trusting and when Hadley shows up at the house courting her she falls hard for him, really hard. Mary is sweet natured and practically has no defenses against Hadley’s charm offensive. Very quickly, too quickly they are forming an emotional attachment.
Hadley actually begins to feel guilty over his role in duping Mary. I would have found this more believable if they had spent more time together but this change of heart happened too fast, especially from a man who is introduced in some of the worst possible scenes in this story. I just could not believe in his complete transformation so quickly.
Mary is entirely gullible with just about everyone in this story. She seems incapable of understanding that there could possibly be people in her orbit who have nefarious motives. She has a long history of unconditional trust an blind loyalty. She is however, kind and willing to give second chances
The leads are a very passionate couple. There is no doubt of the chemistry that exists between them. Overall I am giving this three stars because even though the hero needed much more time and more scenes showing his change of heart, I still liked seeing how he was changed in the end not by money or power but by love.
I never want my H's to be so far gone that I'm not convinced they can be redeemed from what they've done. In this case the H was seduced and enchanted by his wicked stepmother and was in her thrall for years and years. Even at the beginning of the book he has a shocking sexual encounter with her that left me feeling a bit yuck. The day he met the h he had his final sexual encounter with the stepmother. I found these scenes extremely borderline in terms of what I was going to be able to get over. The author was extremely honest about his feelings and tried to redeem him as she went but I don't think she always pulled it off. His initial intentions towards the h were to ruin her and then marry her for her money, then share the proceeds with the stepmother. He was never completely honest with the h and she obviously found out about his relationship with the stepmother through someone else, which of course leads to a misunderstanding and separation.
There is nothing that this H didn't do in his past and if you can move beyond that then you'll probably be ok with this book.
Something that bothered me was the foreign names being in italics. Yes, foreign terms should be in italics, but not foreign names.
