Review by Chick Lit Cafe Nov. 22, 2017
Treasure of Gwenlais is a breath taking novel set in the magical and wondrous realm of the Gaelic kingdoms in the Medieval Middle Ages. It's an epic fantasy romance, influenced by the Scottish Gaelics of yesteryear along with their legends and folklore. The description and the synopsis of the story-line about the "mystical realm of Rinefield" drew me in right away and intrigued me, so I was very excited to read this novel.
Beautiful Princess of Gwenlais, Laurel, is about to be murdered and is looking at imminent demise. Just minutes away from death, in comes Prince Caleb of the kingdom of Heathwin and saves her life.
Extremely fierce Rabkins murdered Laurel's beloved mother whom was the Queen of Gwenlais. Now the Rabkin clan is pursuing Laurel and want her dead, as well.
The Rabkin are a terrifying sort and breed, the humans dread them. They are thought of to be notable, cutthroat slayers, and a lethal power to deal with.
What ensues is a memorable tale of an adventurous journey, full of betrayal, peril, anticipation, romance, love, power and survival.
Laurel and Caleb begin to develop a love for one another even though they live in separate kingdoms. But their delicate love must endure the harrowing things that roll out while the intricate neighboring kingdoms fight for dominance, survival and peace.
Our main character, Laurel, is a delicate victor and a force to be reckoned with, herself.
Her exquisite, intricate demeanor is embodied with strength and resilience. She is a fascinating character within this extraordinary tale.
I, unreservedly, love the kingdoms, and realm, that M.T. Magee cleverly created. It is full of magical treasures and creativity.Although it is a rather long story, my eyes were glued to the pages and I couldn't put it down. It captivated me from the very first page. It has to be one of the best romantic fantasy books I have ever read.
The Treasure of Gwenlais is filled creatures and characters that are beyond the reader's imagination. How our author M.T. Magee came up with such an original, mystical and Gaelic tale, is beyond me. I am a bookworm and have read hundreds of fantasy/Sci Fi/Romance books, but this is my absolute favorite thus far.
M.T. Magee, with great care and forethought, knits together an imaginative narrative with many mentions of enchanting Gaelic culture and kingdoms. The plot and characters are intricately woven together to create a fantastical novel.
The world that Magee has created is magical, mystical and spellbinding. It's an emotional read, as well. I found myself experiencing many welcomed feelings. My reaction to certain events and characters were surprising and thrilling.
The descriptions of the characters, and scenery are brilliant, vivid, colorful and enticing.
The Treasure of Gwenlais is a beautiful read and a treasure unto its own.
I found it to be a fabulous escape from reality-and isn't that what a great book is supposed to do-be a great escape? Well is the book that will take you to another fascinating and irresistible world.
The attention to detail in this marvelous tale is highly impressive and noteworthy.
M.T. Magee will take you on an exciting adventure as you read her extremely well written and composed novel-The Treasure of Gwenlais: The Rienfield Chronicles Book One
Highly Recommended!

Mary Anne Yarde's writing blog I love historical fiction. I love fantasy fiction too.

The Treasure of Gwenlais : The Rienfield Chronicles Book 1
 by M.T. Magee,combines both genres.
Lets have a quick look at the story.
It is said that it is easier to hate, than to try and understand a race that is so different from our own. The Rabkin are such a race. They are a frightening species, feared by the humans, for they are renowned to be exceptionally swift killers and a deadly force to be reckoned with.

Prince Caleb of Heathwin, longs for peace and security for his kingdom and he has secured a fragile alliance between his people and these mysterious creatures.
But dark forces move against this delicate alliance.Unexpectedly a tribe of Rabkin attack a small defenseless village in the neighbouring  kingdom of Gwenlais. These Rabkin are different from the others -they have no respect for life or for death - and they bear different markings to the resident Rabkin tribes. They are strangers, outsiders, mercenaries.
Princess Laurel of Gwenlais is just seconds away from death. The Rabkins have murdered her much loved mother - the Queen of Gwenlais - and they are now hunting her. Prince Caleb saves the Princess just in time. This blatant disregard for life shocks him, and knowing the Rabkin as he does, he cannot understand it.
Laurel and Caleb have always been close, despite living in separate kingdoms, and the events that are about to unfold draws them closer together. But their newfound love is as fragile as the peace between the kingdoms and there is an unknown enemy that threatens to destroy everything...
What did I think?
The joy of Kindles is that it tells you roughly how long a book is going to take you to read. According to my Kindle it was going to take me just over 31 hours to read The Treasure of Gwenlais. So either my reading speed is exceptionally slow or this book was incredibly long.Turns out it was the latter! I have to be honest, I would not normally even attempt to read a book that is this long - I just have not go the time to devote such a large portion of it to one book, but the description of the story intrigued me. After doing some quick calculations in my head, I realised that each chapter was going to take me over an hour to get through. So I quickly decided that if Chapter 1 did not hook me in,then I would give the rest of the book a miss. Two hours later I looked up from the book to check the time, and realised that I was late for an appointment!
I absolutely adore the world that Magee has created. I am trying to think of something to compare it to - think of the dramatic backdrop of Game of Thrones, a pinch of Narnia, a dash of Lord of the Rings and a very large splash of the greatest romance you have ever read and you may be getting somewhere. Actually, I don't think even that description gives it justice. Dare I say...this book is an original?? If there is such a thing.
The attention to detail is exquisite. It is almost an hour-by-hour chronicle of what is happening in these peoples lives - but instead of becoming bogged down in the detail, which is always a risk when writing like this, it just gave me athirst to read more. It became almost like an addiction. This book monopolized all my spare time and I became ever so slightly anti-social for a week or so!
Magee is obviously passionate about her Irish and Scottish ancestry and the world she has created has a whisper of the kingdoms of the ancient Celts. Although in her world, it is perfectly acceptably to drink tea and eat dainty sandwiches! Rightly so. And occasionally a man eating plant will try to kill you...such is life.
Every single one of the characters that you meet in this book is not only unique, but also believable. She breathes life into every single person she talks about, be it a hero or villain.King or servant. Human or Rabkin.
I adored this book. I loved the world, the characters, the plot, the intrigue and the romance. What a beautiful, beautiful story.
I am so glad I took a chance and read Chapter 1. What an adventure I would have missed out on if I had passed it by. Now hurry up, Magee, and write book 2. I want to find out what happens next!

Reviewed by Brittney Rossie for Readers' Favorite  The Treasure of Gwenlais by M.T. Magee is an epic fantasy romance about a prophecy in which a female heir will unite two kingdoms. However, there are those that fear the prophecy's fulfillment and set plans inmotion to thwart it. The highly sheltered Princess Laurel of Gwenlais finds herself reliant on the help of neighboring Prince Caleb of Heathwin, who is considered quite barbaric by the people of Gwenlais, but whom she has known and adored her whole life. In the fight to thwart the many threats on her life - be it man eating plants, highly trained assassin cats, Lethal Rabkin creatures, or regular old humans - they must learn to work together and trust each other in new ways as well as also overcome personal weaknesses and kingdom prejudices. The fantasy elements were uniquely imaginative and added something extra to what would have been an enjoyable medieval Celtic romance. The fantasy elements create unusual twists and turns to the journey that Princess Laurel and Prince Caleb must take in order to fulfill the prophecy. I particularly loved the bantering dialogue between many of the characters. Magee has great insight into people and humor. She has created lovable characters that suck you into the Kingdoms of Gwenlais and Heathwin, and has imagined wonderful fantasy elements to create a world that you won't want to leave.

Beyond Amazing
Readers, take heed! This book will grab you, hold you and forever be etched in your mind. I absolutely loved it and in my opinion it is one of the best I have ever read. There are so many aspects to it and yet the author tied it all together, creating a magical and amazing book. Kind of like a bunch of balloons tied together, anchored to the story but each holding its own and bring it to life.I love everything about the book, the fantasy, the romance, and the bonds of friendships, loyalty and betrayal. The emotions are real and I was moved to tears as well as giggles. I love that the places are based on real places in Scotland and Ireland and the many different characters, races and beings. Two kingdoms drawn together, Princess Laurel of Gwenlais and Prince Caleb of Heathwin are perfect together and their love grows as they fight together to defeat the evil that befalls them. All of the characters are rich and strong and complete the story. The author's prose is perfection and most refreshing, as the genre of fantasy has become cold and hard. The Gaelic dialogue is beautiful and added so much to the story. The attention to details is impeccable and made me feel like I was right there. It is a rather long book, but it is so compelling and such a wonderful read, it did not feel long. I am extremely impressed that this is the first work by M.T. Magee. She is a brilliant writer and her style sets her apart from the rest. Her love of writing is so clear and it shows in every word. It has been awhile since a writer captured my attention as she has. Her talent and imagination are incredible and I see her becoming one of my favorites.I can not wait for the next book. I recommend this with my highest regards, it is a  Must read. Enjoy the journey and the magic that awaits you!

From the Author

The world I have created, comes from the inspiration of both my Scottish heritage and my husband's Irish descent, with pride and respect for both cultures. The beauty of the Scottish Highlands, as well as the lush rolling meadows of Ireland, serve as a backdrop for the mythical realm of Rienfield. Many of the names of villages and towns that are used are actual names of towns and villages of Scotland and Ireland. They are used in direct correlation for what their rich past made them known for and is applied with loving respect for their history in the story. Many of the names of the characters are Irish, Scottish, or Gaelic, again showing my love and admiration for our heritages.
The characters also speak Irish Gaelic, from time to time, referring to it as "old speak." I hope you will find this as fascinating and beautiful as I did. I wanted to give you as readers, an uncommon experience in fantasy.  Certain races and creatures have "abilities", without the element and use of magic.  The world they live in is completely fantastical, inspired of Gaelic folklore and legends.  Uniquely original and unlike anything you may have encountered in the fantasy genre, as you will only find the races, creatures and beings, nowhere else but Rienfield.  You will find the Kingdoms of Gwenlais and Heathwin filled with wonder, danger, adventure, romance, love of family as well as betrayalThe people, races, and beings, will beckon you to return and visit, over and again, sharing in their joys, sorrows, tragedies and triumphs.
So my friends, find your comfortable reading place, and immerse yourself in the lives of the warm, courageous, humorous, and sometimes frightening characters, which make up the world of Rienfield.
With warmest regards;
