Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Originally published in 1884, this translation of the 17th-century work Treatise on the Love of God is a challenging, complex text discussing the inclinations of the soul, especially toward a love of the divine. Saint Francis de Sales explains to dedicated readers how every aspect of human life has as its goal the cultivation of this divine affection--the author devotes great effort upon and exploration of this single emotion.

Devout Christians and spiritual seekers who delve into this book will be rewarded by the great insights the saint has to offer. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

About the Author

St. Francis de Sales was born in 1567 to Francois and Francoise de Boisy in what is currently Haute-Savoie, France. His father sent him to a good school when he was young, and he received spiritual formation from the Jesuits. After a disturbing spiritual fear of being condemned, he eventually resolved his problem and decided to dedicate his life to God in 1587. He became a doctor of law at the age of 24 at the Jesuit College of Clermont, Paris, and was ordained a priest by Bishop Claude de Granier and stationed in Geneva in 1593. He became bishop of Geneva in 1602.

Francis de Sales is the author of various collections of sermons on Mary, Lent, prayer and Christmastide, as well as a work entitled Set Your Heart Free, edited by John Kirvan. He was known as a spiritually understanding man as well as a friend of the poor. Though known for his great intellect and theological wisdom, he spoke with simplicity and earnestness, so that all could understand. An Introduction to the Devout Life , his best-loved work, is based on notes he wrote for a cousin for marriage, stressing that sanctity is possible in everyday life. He died in 1622 on December 28, and was canonized by Pope Alexander VII in 1665. His feast is celebrated on January 24.

555 Pp. PB. Masterful combination of theological principles and practical application regarding divine love-the subject of Our Lord's first and greatest commandment. Based on Scripture, the Fathers, St. Thomas, it reveals the author's great learning. An acknowledged classic which goes to the heart of the True Religion

Wonderful. This explains the higher stages of spiritual growth in detail, insofar as that is possible. Most practically, de Sales gives necessary warnings, cautions, and advice to grow further. For those of us searching for "more" because we've read Teresa and John and Ignatius and...well you get the idea...but still seek more detail, more clarity, because we are experiencing things that are alluded to in the others, but not helpfully clarified, St. Francis de Sales is your saint. God bless the man for writing it and thank you Lord!!! for the english translation in my century! On the other hand, if you are looking for a comforting, easy, read that lulls one into a state of feeling good about himself, this is not the book.

What else would I expect from St. Francis DeSales. This is very difficult reading. I would not reccomend it for the faint of heart. It really peers directly into the human heart and its many facets, how it is linked to the soul and why we are so loved by God. Can't put this down.

St.Francis de Sales is a master of the spiritual life. HIS TLG IS A bit deep for the ordinary reader. Philosophical and theological reasoning is a bit too much for the ordinary person. Once you pass Book Three there is greater interest. This book has weathered the ages and is one of the spiritual classics of all time.
