About the Author
Lawrence Allen lived in Greater China for 20 years. While at university his parents made an early, pioneering trip to China in 1980. Intrigued by their photos and tales from a newly emerging China, Lawrence linked his interest in international business with his fascination for China. He launched his career serving various executive roles with multinational companies in Taipei, Taiwan in 1989, followed by postings in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing. In 2010 Lawrence published Chocolate Fortunes: The Battle for the Hearts, Minds, and Wallets of China’s Consumers (AMACOM 2010), a China business book that chronicles the quarter-century battle between the world’s chocolate companies for the hearts, minds, and taste buds of China’s emerging chocolate consumers.

The book is a saga of two generations and it takes you on a whirlwind trip through Communist China and overflows into the United States. From the author’s perspective, after living in China for over 20+ years, the main character Curtis experiences the staggering transformation of what was pre-Tiananmen Square to post-Tiananmen Square. He delivers us from country to country within the continent of China, inspecting the complex cultures that overlap.
Tree of Liberty reinforced everything I have ever known in my heart about China and the Far East, being fortunate enough to have lived and worked in the Far East. Through the main character Curtis you see and experience what it was to live in all parts of China and meet the Chinese people, from rural China to the big cities, it is a thrill ride from cover to cover. Espionage, adventure, and romance this book has it all! This BOOK is a must read for all ages and should be mandatory for all high school and college students!
Tree of Liberty reinforced everything I have ever known in my heart about China and the Far East. Being fortunate to have lived and worked in the Far East it brought back so many fond memories about the people of Asia.
Book 3 makes me think of the "ghost of christmas future". What would the world be like if our political current path remains unchanged.
Watching a character grow and change over decades was very interesting. Admittedly, I was not always pulling for him. Would I have done the same if I were Curtis in Tiananmen Square? His actions are not always glorious, but certainly adds to the depth. For me it was truly 3 books in 1.
