Much to my delight, it has worked very nicely. There is some type of light sensor on it – I guess it is so when you walk into the room or turn on the light, it will let you know if the tree needs water or not. However, it also might work on vibrations. Because we did get a few times when it seemed to randomly chime to let us know the water was at a good level. (Maybe the water was very close to the full level, and our footsteps activated it.) Mostly, though, it worked as expected-as we filled the water, it would chime and we would stop. Occasionally we would hear Jingle Bells playing. We would add water to the funnel until we heard the chime, and life is good again.
At first, we did check the levels when watering, when each alert sounded, and at other times with no sounds, to make sure it was accurate. (It would be silly to rely completely on the gadget and have our tree dry out and potentially ignite.) It has seemed to be very accurate, and took some of the stress away from, ”Did we water the tree? Did you forget to water the tree?” The funnel also does make it nice to be able to fill the tree from a standing position instead of creeping under the tree and crawling through dropped needles.
Pros:
The funnel and tube work. (you could make this yourself for pennies.)
Cons:
The tube really is too short but no biggie - at least you're not crawling under the tree to add water.
The directions are pretty vague and if it worked like it is supposed to that would be okay, but it doesn't so the directions kind of suck.
The over fill alert sounds like a doorbell chime. Not fun if you have have dogs.
Major Cons:
When your tree needs water it "plays Jingle Bells every ten minutes" at least that what the instructions say. Mine plays every ONE minute.
"Wait 5 seconds after 'Jingle Bells' then add the water." I count slowly to 10 (just to make sure) and add the water. The second the water hits the sensor it plays 'Jingle Bells' again.
If I want to add water before I go to bed to make sure I'm not waking up at 2am to 'Jingle Bells', the over fill sensor doesn't work - it only seems to work if it has played 'Jingle Bells' first. (I learned this the hard way.)
The warranty cost ten bucks - thats half the price of this item. Really? I need to pay the company to replace their piece of junk? Nope - no way. I'll cut my losses right here thank you.

P.S. I find it curious that 'customers' that have never written reviews before or never have even hit the helpful button on any review (as of todays date: 12/30/2011) would give glowing 5 star reviews - and all using as many exclamations points as possible. Just sayin'.
The only issue I ran into were the creases on the tube. The flow was just too slow and if the needles got into the funnel forget about it, it literally clogged at the first/top crease. I tried to heat the tube straight with a hair dryer but that did not work. What actually worked were zip ties. I had some laying around and zip tied each crease until the creases disappeared. The flow is so strong now, I can hear the air sucking down the tube every time I stop pouring.
Take a look at my picture. Hope this helps the other reviewers with this problem.
