If you have any interest in Belize and especially if you already have been "bitten" by the Belize bug... get a copy of this book and sit down and enjoy. I saw this book at Placencia Office Supply and even though it was wrapped in plastic, so I couldn't flip through the pages, I decided to take a chance. I am glad I did.

"Treehouse Perspectives" will test your notions of what it means to live in a third world country. Even if you have never considered the idea, and especially not in the thoroughly immersed way that Tina and Kirby did it, you will find yourself imagining the possibilities.

Set in the remote Toledo District of Belize and beginning back in the early 1970s, the Salisbury's began their odyssey with the barest of resources and little more than a dream.

They chronicle their adventures as alternating vignettes, delighting the reader with details of living that one would ordinarily think might be boring. Far from it. The narratives are at times lyrical and Tina especially has a gift for finding the "pulse" of the moment, etching for me the words that have eluded my vocabulary, describing why Belize grabs many of us.

No one who has the dream of "escaping" to somewhere, will be bored by this chronicle. The path the Salisbury family took and the rough edges they endured and magnificently adjusted to and thrived on, are not for everyone. But the lessons they learned about the culture of Belize and its' people are terribly important...

This is an amazing book, if you have ever thought just once in your lifetime that you wanted to throw off the chains, quit your job, and move some where warm, you need to read this book. The Salisbury's memoirs are a an finely woven tale of the trials, challenges and triumphs that come with making the decision to move abroad that many people consider, but few actually do.

Their stories about the early challenges, to their eventual adoption of Belize as their home is an inspiring story that covers their move from California to the small town of Punta Gorda, or PG as it is known in Belize, in 1971. They escape the 9 to 5 of their lives in the U.S. and learn to live simply, and richly.

Originally thought this book was about constructing a "treehouse". I was wrong. It is a study in thoughtfulness and an account of adventure mixed with the convictions and values of the 60's. These fine individuals lay out for you, their values, dreams and efforts to valiantly conquer their environment, both in water(they are sailors and boat builders) and the jungle. Discusses all their triumphs and hardships and their victory over all. They must also deal with different cultures, politics and languages. The book helps the reader to travel along with them on their journey to self fullfillment.

This book kept my interest with great stories of a young US couple and kids finding ways to get by in a very different world. I loved the openness of telling their own stories. Makes me want to move to Belize and build a tree house.
