It has been so much help, so many great ideas and has even gave us some extra bonding time together with books!! Definitely worth the money!!!!
Perhaps my favorite aspect of this book is that it allows kids to learn how to create an internal dialogue around the content of a text. Rather than merely paying attention to plot or a list of "characteristics" like theme or imagery, Rita guides students to consider what they bring to their readings first. Then she guides them to consider what the author may have intended or what clues there are in a book to the intended meanings. Reading comprehension is not about multiple choice tests and identifying picky details. It's about internalizing the meanings and themes so that they enrich the reader. This book is a wonderful contribution to that journey and outcome.
The artwork supports the text beautifully. Tracy Molitor's illustrations allow the metaphor (trees in the forest) to be grasped more immediately and with more power. She also creates visual relief throughout the book for the reader and helps students to grow in their visual literacy as well.
I've worked with Rita over the last 10 years and admire her! Highly recommended.
Ms. Cevasco, a Speech-Language Pathologist, begins with an overview of how language skills and writing intertwine. The book is split into chapters with each chapter providing a different activity that can be used to assist a child (or adult) in growing their comprehension and writing skills. The book is written concisely (139 pages), which I truly appreciated since I don't want to be bogged down with extra "fluff." Ms. Cevasco gives specific instructions on how to teach each skill and also has short reading passages included, so that the adult reading the book may also practice the techniques they will be teaching! Sprinkled throughout each chapter are excerpts from Tracy Molitors (a wonderfully talented artist) and Laurie, a parent whose children have used the techniques provided. I would highly recommend this book to any parent or SLP who needs some specific ideas on how to work with a child in growing their comprehension and writing skills.
