I bought this at REI, of which I'm a member. It works as advertised, which means I love it! Some reviews stated that you can use this inside a tent because it doesn't give out carbon monoxide, but whatever it is, it produces some gas. I had to step away from it, and there is a big warning "Use only in well ventilated areas, away from open flames" which means no inside tent, car, or in front of fireplace.

The box and lockable top are plastic. There is a stainless steel(?) liner inside the box. The heat pack goes under the stainless liner inside the box. Very neat and clean. There is a neoprene wrap to insulate the heat. The liner is somewhat flimsy. I can bent it no problem. It does mean that if it's dented, you can just fit it back into shape.

There is a temperature chart:High Power goes to 60+ degrees. Super Power goes to 90 degrees Celcius. Hmmm. That is the temperature of hand warmer? I wonder if I can use those instead. Power packs aren't widely sold where I go.

It works great with Ramen noodles, and I assume, other soup-based meal also. There is a problem with heat distribution. The heat was uneven, so solid food may be cooked unevenly. I tried to cook raw rice, one Super Power pack didn't quite cook 1 cup of rice. I did open it up after 30 minutes. Maybe quick-cook rice would have been better, but the uneven heat distribution means I'd probably stick with soup-based product, or at least boil the rice in water.

One High Power pack is enough to cook ramen. Absolutely great for that! I'm stocking ramen noodles, now.

The only drawback is that power packs aren't widely available, so you need to stock up, but overall, I'm very happy with the purchase.

Edit: I tried cooking Success Rice using Super Power Pack. It was successful.

I tested this unit this weekend on a short hike on the Bizz Johnson trail. Temps were in the high 60s at 5,000 feet elevation. I used the unit to cook a can of pregrsso soup and mountain home apple cobbler. The good news is that it work on both items. I was worried it was not big enough for a whole can of soup, but it worked fine. The cooking area is much more roomy than it appears. The bad news as a defective heater. One of the heater packs (super temp) failed to operate, the unit started heating then made a loud 'pop' and generated only slight heat and failed to warm the soup beyond ambient. Once replaced heating worked fine for the soup and dessert (mountain Home apple cobbler) (two separate super heaters). I have used MRE type heaters many times before and this is the first failure I have seen and it concerns me about Trekmates Quality Control. The only reason for this failure is a failure to get the chemistry right and that is really hard to do once you have a production line set up. If you had one bad heater you probably had hundreds of bad heaters in that production run. I hope I am wrong, but for now I plan on bringing extra heaters with me when I travel.

This thing worked great. We got mainly for heating up food on road trips, but it will likely get used on other occasions as well. We heated up three pieces of pizza. They were small and stacked on top of each other. The one on the top was only mildly warm, but the one on the bottom was almost hot enough to burn your mouth. We used it in the car while stopped. I wouldn't want to use this while moving much. I would recommend keeping it level when using. You should also set it down on something that can get wet and take more heat than human skin. There was some water that squirted out that was pretty hot. We didn't notice any odor when we used it, but the directions do say to use in well ventilated area. We're happy with it.

I ordered this for use on an extended offshore fishing charter. I prepared my meals in advance and froze them, then placed them in my cooler. Using the Trekmates Super Power Pack, I was able to heat my frozen lasagna to steaming hot in 15 minutes. I must say that I was blown away by how well my flameless cooker worked. It was very easy to clean and maintain while on the boat.
