Editorial Reviews

Original soundtrack to the second season of the critically-acclaimed HBO series. Treme: Music from the HBO Original Series, Season Two revels in the abounding riches of New Orleans music today. Here are brass bands, roots rock, traditional jazz, R&B and Cajun music, with a special nod to the city's piano tradition (with Henry Butler, Jon Cleary, Dr. John, Tom McDermott, David Torkanowsky each prominently featured). Also included is the once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between neo-funksters Galactic, the iconic Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and rapper Juvenile. Recorded live on the streets and in the clubs, these recordings capture the indefatigable spirit of America's greatest musical city.

I'm a newcomer to New Orleans music--I never really thought I'd enjoy it, and I never gave it much of a chance. I don't love the HBO series "Treme" unreservedly, although I definitely enjoy it, but the music has been a revelation to me. This album gathers together some of the most magical moments from a show full of incredible music. The songs run the gambit from stompin' Traditional jazz, to evocative instrumentals like "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" to the dirty mouthed bounce/hip-hop of DJ Davis and the Brassy Knoll (a creation of the show). This disc is a self contained party, an introduction to a very vital and alive musical tradition, and a great listen. This should do the trick for fans of the show, and should be good listening for folks who just want to hear a little of what New Orleans has to offer.

First, I love Treme, and I love the music from in every single episode! I bought the soundtrack from Season 1 and still play it often. I also bought the soundtrack from Season 2. However, it seemed to me that many of the great songs by wonderful artists I heard in the Season 2 episodes did not make it to the soundtrack. This was a big disappointment. The selections are kind of blah when compared to Season 1 and what could have been for the Season 2 soundtrack. The Season 2 soundtrack struck me as a quick-buck effort that may have been hampered by licensing and/or royalty issues. I don't know what the problems were, but I will be much more careful when considering the inevitable Season 3 soundtrack.

Despite this being an album of a show about music, there's only one disc. As with season 1, I find this disappointing; I'm sure they could have filled another disc, and people would have bought it gladly.

That said, this collection feels more satisfying and complete than the first album; it seems like every major musical presence in the show at least gets one track (though often one out of several). Of course, the DJ Davis skewering of the Federal Government is a highlight (and a major part of the show), but there's also the Cajun Mardi Gras celebration, the brass bands with hip hop elements mixed in, and the nightclub piece that absolutely sounds like it's a classic recorded in 1925, even though it isn't. And of course, there has to be some Kermit.

If you haven't seen the show, it's a decent sample of random New Orleans-related music. Then again, if you haven't seen the show, go watch it. Then buy the album.

One of the best things about this television series was the music. There are times during just about every episode where you feel like Simon and Overmyer are just standing back saying, "listen to this, isn't this fantastic". And it is.

The variety of music and high quality of musicianship is tops. The music stands alone even if you never watched the series. Can't wait for Season 3 CD!

There is a great diversity in material here. If you're a fan of brass, and the dirty, almost grimy sounds that New Orleans is known for, this is it. Soul Apostles here, though without Mr. Batiste, and a few other gems that I didn't realize were on the soundtrack. Discover the music from what was my favorite Treme season.

Like the first season recordings, more great offerings from the rich harvest that is the New Orleans music scene. Only sorry they quit offering with only two albums when more could have been produced for audio pleasure.

After hearing some cuts off of Season 1 soundtrack on Chuck Haddix's "Saturday Night Fish Fry", I bought this with confidence it would be as fantastic. It has way too many mediocre duds on it for me to recommend it.
