I have used Trend Micro's security solutions in the past and there have been both good and bad versions that have hit my desk. I was hopeful that this version would be a big improvement from the last version I tried (the 2010 edition) and while it is there are important considerations that I believe make this package overpriced.

I loaded Titanium Internet Security 2012 on a 32-bit Windows XP target, with a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 with 2 GB RAM. This system cannot be considered cutting edge by most standards anymore but it is sufficient for running this security suite.

Although the requirements on the packaging list a number of acceptable browsers for Titanium to work, what it doesn't tell you is that MSIE version 7.0 or better MUST be installed for the package to even load. Keep this in mind, as it is easy to get very frustrated when loading this package on an older target. Once I loaded MSIE 8.0 on the target machine I had no more issues with installation - it installed relatively smoothly and it came up without a fight.

Trend has steadily improved their user interface and Titanium 2012 has a very simple, straightforward and aesthetically pleasing interface. The dashboard gives immediate access to the most important functions right away - scanning, parental controls and utilities/settings. I did run into one quirk with the interface, though. When a password is set and I try to access a feature that requires me to enter the password, the password dialog box has a tendency to pop under the dashboard and it is impossible to bring it forward. I am not sure why this is the case.

The last version of Trend Micro's security offerings that I tried was the 2010 version and I had issues with the firewall. Trend solved that issue - there's no firewall in this package.

Did some evaluative online research which stated Norton, Kaspersky etc overall better than TM which had degraded in malware deterrence effectiveness. Please confirm this yourself and comment as needed. Tried the 2012 TM anyway as we had been using it for years and had been satisfied. BIG PROBLEMS with the installation disc and then with TM's Firewall Booster apparently making Windows firewall permanently inoperable during TM installation. The system event log confirmed TM application errors. TM technical support was brief, unsympathetic and simply gave out Microsoft's technical support 800 number, ie, they said MS firewall not our problem, goodbye.

Conclusion, am returning TM 2012 security suite for refund. In this process discovered that Microsoft's free Security Essentials may be a better product, and if need be Kaspersjy 2012 has well reviewed SW firewall. I suspect that TM expects loss of viability in the near future. Goodbye Trend Micro.

Update Mar 2013: Been using Kaspersky Internet Security suite ever since and am not disappointed, ie, not one malware incident and KIS has more features that I use than TM.

I installed this program on an older computer used primarily for surfing and email. Other security suites really slowed this computer down and were not all that effective. I was particuarly attracted by the promise of easy set up and economic use of disk space and memory.

The package comes with two cds, one for PCs and one for MAC. Installation is easy. Just pop the CD in and follow the instructions. I did have to update a service pack on the computer before I was able to install the program. I did think the actual installation and activation time was a tad long, about ten minutes not including download of an update to the titanium program. Other than that, the program seems to be working well without interfering with the computer's performance. Notably, this program does not have the constant alerts and notifications youget with other security suites. There are customizable parental controls, data theft protection and a system cleaner that removes cookies, browsing history, registries and the like.

So far this seems to be a satisfactory program. It is easy to set up and appears to be effective. Additionally, the price is reasonable.

As a retired computer professional I have used Trend Micro Products for over a decade and have been very happy with them. However, upon expiration of my current subscription to their service I decided to get this version of their product to use on a desktop HP computer. Bad, Bad, mistake. After ten or more hours attempting to install and multiple error messages that required getting to command prompt level to deal with I gave up. The install program is so stupid it won't even overwrite its own previously unpacked files and identifies them as "incompatible" software. In other words, one blown install for any reason will cause you to find and delete a number of files and a reboot of your machine before you can try again.

Do yourself a favor and buy anything else as this product is not even remotely satisfactory, especially if you apparently can't install it on any machine that isn't new just out of the box.

I used Norton as an anti-virus for over ten years but looked for an alternative when the bells and whistles on that program started to cost real money. Three years ago I switched to Trend Micro and have never looked back.

This program (2012)'loads' as slow as a slug; you may even think it's hung but be patient and it should complete the process without your intervention. Once loaded I do not notice a bit of performance deterioration. The only way you even know it's working is when it gives you a summary of what threats have occurred on your system and what it did about them. This 'scheduled scan' is user defined from the main 'console'. I have had two instances where an email was automatically deleted after Trend Micro stated there was a trojan horse in an attachment. Yikes!! Turns out they were right as one of those was from my grandson who wrote three days later telling me his address book had been hacked and the email I had received from him was infected.

No Internet Security/Anti-Virus program is foolproof but I've found this one to be unobtrusive, effective, and inexpensive!!
