I was very excited when I found the Trendnet wireless card for so cheap, but I now think that perhaps you get what you pay for. I purchased a different brand wireless card, put it in the same USB slot the Trendnet card was in, and haven't had any problems. I hope my issue was a random lemon and no one else has to deal with this hot mess. :(
The TRENDnet TEW-804UB was a good choice. It took me 10-15 minutes to run the setup from the included CD and install the driver, plug in the adapter into a USB port, and then I was back in business with a strong signal. I haven't had any problems with wifi access at all after installing it several days ago. The only reason I've deducted one star is that it sticks out of the case quite a bit and fits rather loosely in the USB slot so I have accidentally knocked it out of position a few times already. When I place the laptop in my briefcase the adapter sometimes fall out. I'll have to be extra careful not to lose it.
I am using this adapter with a Dell Inspiron 15" Laptop running Windows 10.
Note that Amazon combines reviews of various models, so you'll have to read the label at the top of the review to be sure you're reading a review for the model you intend to purchase. This is a very annoying feature of the Amazon review system, since not all products from one manufacturer are equal!
I will update if I hear anything from TRENDnet, but for the time being I am not pleased and certainly can't recommend the product based on durability and unresponsive customer service.
After finally hearing from customer service and, at their request, performing a couple of tests that proved the device was indeed dead, I was issued a RMA number and given precise instructions on how to ship the item back to them (at my expense.) Trying to move things along I sent it two-day.
I received a replacement on July 19th, approximately seven weeks after I contacted TRENDnet, and it is, just like the last one, currently working fine. I guess that should be enough, but given the quick failure of the last unit, and the aggravatingly slow and needlessly cumbersome response and requirements from basic customer service (a reality in stark contrast to the company representative assigned to respond immediately to Amazon review complaints) and the large number of other one star reviews, I am leaving the rating at one star because I do not feel good about recommending this product to anyone and I certainly will steer clear of this brand in the future.
The only problem I'm yet to figure out is how to stop it from disconnecting to the internet when my laptop goes to sleep and how to get it to automatically connect to saved networks. Because, even though I have clicked the 'Connect automatically' option, it does not connect automatically.
I would recommend this product to anyone I know. It's cheap (for its capabilities) and efficient and very very portable.
