But when the missing woman is found brutalized in a manner that suggests Jefferts may have been framed, Bowditch receives an ominous warning from state prosecutors to stop asking questions.

For Bowditch, whose own life was recently shattered by a horrific act of violence, doing nothing is not an option. His clandestine investigation reopens old wounds between Maine locals and rich summer residents and puts both his own life and that of the woman he loves in jeopardy. As he closes in on his quarry, he suddenly discovers how dangerous his opponents are, and how far they will go to prevent him from bringing a killer to justice.

Good sophomore effort from the author of the Mike Bowditch mystery series.

Warden Bowditch reveals himself as a bulldog (much like in the first book) who does not let command instructions, promises to his girlfriend, or often common sense stand in the way of relentless pursuit of the truth to a murder mystery.

The Maine wildness is a key aspect of these books and the author is good at outdoor description. Bowditch is more of a jerk than some of the other protagonists I follow in different series, but it fits his backstory and what he went through as a child of an abusive/absent father and escapist mother.

In this book, a murder of a young woman fits the MO of an infamous Maine Case from years ago. Bowditch uses his intuition to piece together how these crimes fit and whether or not they are in fact linked. His sidekick looks like it may be a retired Maine Game Warden who appears to offer sage advice and counsel to the still young Bowditch (I'm forecasting that retired Charley is going to be the Henry Standing Bear (Longmire) or Nate Romanowski (Pickett) of this series - though it doesn't appear the retired warden is in shape to actually help out in the field himself). All in all a pleasurable mystery that delivers.

This, the second Mike Bowditch thriller, establishes Doiron as a keeper, as far as I'm concerned. His books are every bit as good as those by C.J. Box and others of the genre. He knows how to put a book together: Good plot, pretty well-developed characters, good local lore and description, suspense, etc. My only criticism -- and it's a mild one -- is that Bowditch is very much a loose cannon, perhaps too much so to be trusted with a badge and gun. I know you want a main character to be a bit of a rebel and trouble-maker, but some of the things Bowditch does would not be done by even a rookie cop. And that could weaken the character's credibility. But, I thoroughly enjoyed the book to the extent that I zipped through in in hours. Very good effort by Doiron.

Trespasser - is the sequel to the Poacher's Son and is a complicated murder mystery featuring the life of Mike Bowditch District Game Warden. Each page is crammed full of meticulous descriptions of the trails, lakes, woods, seasons & geography of Maine; of the characters including physical descriptions; poverty stricken rural areas; of the daily activities of the life of a district game warden in the rural woodlands of Maine and historic tidbits scattered throughout the book. The writer literally transplants you smack dab in the middle of each situation with clarity.

Mike Bowditch is a 25 year old healthy 6' 2" 180 + pound District Game Warden in the rural woods of Maine. He has the highest conviction rate in the district but that fact is not what people including fellow law enforcement remembers. It's been 7 long months since the death of his Father Jack Bowditch. Jack had a bad reputation as a womanizing, hard drinking poacher along with being a cop killer. Mike was involved in the massive man hunt for Jack at first thinking his Father was innocent but soon realized after being taken hostage that his Father was guilty. Jack committed suicide when his young girlfriend died in the struggle to cross into Canada leaving Mike and his mentor Legendary Retired Game Warden Charley Stevens seriously injured. Mike is struggling to get through the anger and grief. Mike can't respond to a call, grab a cup of coffee, investigate without someone recognizing him and making some condescending snide comments. Mike's "chip on his shoulder" grows a little more each day as he dodges his fellow law enforcement officers continued disrespectful heckling & harassment accusing him of being just like his father. On top of all of that, he was still getting threatening calls at home.

While Mike is out at Hank Varnum's place investigating the destruction of some ATV trespassers he gets a call to handle an "mva vs deer" call. Mike wraps up with Hank and heads over to the scene and finds copious amounts of blood & deer hair on the road but no deer and no driver (Ashley Kim). State Trooper Curt Hutchins finally shows up to the scent and basically dismisses the missing driver and the deer with little concern which raises Mike's radar. Mike takes samples just in case he needs evidence proved later. Something doesn't feel right about the whole thing but Mike lets it go heading home - late again - missing date night with Sarah his live in girlfriend. Sarah and Mike's relationship is fragile.

Mike becomes obsessed thinking that something is not right with the accident last night and makes some phone calls to be sure that the driver of the car, Ashley Kim is safe. All hell breaks loose when Mike finds a dead girl's body obviously beaten, raped & "slut" engraved on her body. When the authorities arrive on the scene suspicion arises because the murder resembles the late Nikki Donnatelli brutal murder from 7 years ago - but Erland Jeffert's still in jail. What is going on? Is the wrong man in jail?

Close to the end Mike starts begging GOD....

The mystery is set in midcoast Maine with detective Mike Bowditch of the Maine Warden Service sensing that grisly murders of two young women that happened years apart, are somehow connected. Doiron's completely plausible characters are well-known to anyone who has lived in midcoast Maine. The reader will learn much about the interconnected lives of Mainers ranging from a hardscrabble father and son living in a trashy trailer to a wealthy scion of society who becomes a suspect in this tangled tale. The ending has a completely unexpected twist. I got off to a slow start with this book but after forty pages couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an entertaining summer read.

If your experience of Maine extends no further than Murder, She Wrote, this, the second of flawed Warden Mike Bowditch's adventures, illustrates a land and people quite unlike Cabot Cove. And by 'illustrate', I mean just that: Paul Doiron really shares the scent, sight and taste of the landscape: every bush and tree, every drip and sheet of rain, every breeze and every howling gale - you can feel Paul Doiron's love of his state and its outdoors in every chapter. In Mike Bowditch we have a well-meaning, young, stubborn, and rash hero, and in his supporting cast we have thoroughly whole characters on both sides of the law. The language captures the environment beautifully, but doesn't slow the pace - the story clips along, making these books quick and absorbing reads. Like the first Bowditch thriller, The Poacher's Son (which I also heartily recommend), the plot will keep you in the dark until the end.
