First book in a new shifter series and wow! it's good. Intense, spiritual, magical and sad. The main female character is mixed up, confused and often suffers a deep depression due to something that happened a few years previous. Two main male characters are opposites of each other, one is very much alpha male and all wolf, the other while still being strong is more sensitive and calm. Reed is human/stag and has loved Veli since they were very young, told by the elders that they were destined mates at first they had no reason to doubt. As they grew though they have sensed that though they love each other it is more of a kinship type of love. Kane on the other hand, as soon as he and his wolf sense Veli and her wolf there is a connection. The writer weaves an interesting, sometimes complex story that you just have to keep reading. The scenery is described vividly as are the actual scenes themselves. The animals sound beautiful. This is a continuing series so do not expect an ending, it continues in the next book so it is in no way a stand alone. You need to commit to reading all the books to get the full story, though personally I feel it is worth doing so. I love the whole mix of human animal shifters, magic and spirits as well as the normal human aspect of the story. Nothing about this for you to get bored with in any way.
The Tribe are Native American shifters who live cut off from the outside world. They are very in touch with the spiritual side of their natures.
Our heroine, Nirvelli is depressed and distracted. She should be happy, in a very short time she is going to marry Reed, the man she has loved for years. Velli's problem is the huge burden of shame and guilt she carries. Even with her magic and her wolf, she still feels something is very wrong.
Kane has come to the Tribe's lands to help heal his magic , and maybe get his mate some extra help. If Lily can't learn to control her magic Kane will have to kill her.
The attitude of the tribal elders has caused Velli trouble ever since her first change. That was also when the depression started. When the new people turn up , things for our heroine go from bad to worse in some ways, and improve in another.
Kane is a very old and arrogant wolf, used to doing what he wants and getting everything his own way. He is very powerful but so are others in the Tribe.
I found this a very hard book to put down and look forward to the next one.
