Editorial Reviews

One of the all time classic jazz recordings by acclaimed guitarist/producer/composer Royce Campbell. Since Campbell was Henry Mancini's guitarist for 19 years, no one is more qualified to do the consummate Mancini tribute. Also featuring Bruce Barth on piano, Terry Clark on drums, and Bill Moring on bass.

This is a wonderful Wes Montgomery influenced quartet tribute to Henry Mancini.

Royce Campbell has chosen a top notch rythmn section & choice Mancini tunes.

This is an easy-to-live-with & very tasteful recording.

Just to say I really enjoyed this album. A truly great guitarist in my view. Saddened to hear I believe he's suffered a stroke.

I came across this in an "Easy Listening" section of one of the few stores I frequent......it is that...but a lot more!!

The program is mostly of Henry Mancini's music from the movies except for two selections from television and an original composition, "Letter To Henry", by Royce Campbell.

Royce Campbell is well qualified for this tribute having been Mancini's guitarist for almost 20 years. If you have to categorize his style and sound, it's very much like Wes Montgomery with a touch of George Benson. He's a very gifted and versatile musician, having played with a number of symphony orchestras including my hometown St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. His style is richly melodic and tasteful, unhurried yet driving, with a lyrical approach to changes. His musical associates for this program are pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Bill Moring, and the well known drummer, Terry Clarke.

If you like Mancini's music, it's difficult to pick favorites from this program. The warm fluid sound of Campbell on a well thought out solo rendition of "Dreamsville" is probably my favorite. "Wine And Roses" and "Mr Lucky" are two really swinging head arrangements (Royce calls them "faking gigs") that show off the quartet at its best, complete to trading fours. The beautiful theme from "Breakfast At Tiffany's" comes across as very refined, sophisticated jazz with some great "Shearing" type of piano/guitar harmony.....as also does "Pink Panther", a tune I will always associate with tenor saxist Plas Johnson. The tune most famous from "Breakfast At Tiffany's", "Moon River", described by Royce as a "Mancini Mona Lisa", is very tastefully done in 4/4 time with a bossa nova rhythm.

The entire cd is solid! You will want this for your collection if you enjoy Henry Mancini's music, an excellent jazz quartet, or a dynamite guitar sound in one or all combinations.
