A fun-filled Halloween party becomes the sight of one of the bloodiest openings I've seen in ages, as one of the masked partygoers, a local highschooler named Patrick Weaver (Thom Neimann) - who everyone knows by the nickname of Trick - abruptly and without visible provocation goes on a killing spree. Taking the other partygoers completely by surprise, Trick slashes and hacks through multiple victims in a matter of moments, before being taken down himself by some of the other kids. A couple of hours later at the hospital, the seemingly close-to-death Trick overpowers a police detective and nearly escapes, just to be gunned down and fall through a second-story window. Once again, the killer somehow escapes, possibly making his way to the nearby river and either swimming away or being carried far downstream by the current. Detective Mike Denver (Omar Epps) doesn't share his department's view that Trick is almost certainly deceased, and wants to keep the case open.
But nothing else happens. At least until October 31 of the next year, when Trick strikes again at a different, nearby town and decimates another round of victims. The next year, a third town, a third massacre. Trick changes weapons, masks and face paint as he goes along, leading more to most of the police believing these to be copycat killings, while in the general public, a depraved fan following emerges to idolize Trick. Detective Denver remains obsessed with stopping Trick, in a way that's somewhat reminiscent of the Dr. Loomis/Michael Myers scenario, and the stakes continue to escalate each year.
Some modern slashers aim to be really different from what's come before, while others succeed by sticking with has worked well previously. Trick does both at the same time, giving us something really innovative while at the same time almost guaranteed to appeal to fans of Halloween, Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street and their relatives. Well written and directed, with high production values, high quality performances and great special effects, I'd say that if you're a horror fan - or especially of the slasher subgenre - you've really got to do yourself a favor and get this movie. It's great. Sequel(s), please!
