Mixed Bag at Best
Our family is fanatical about puzzles and puzzle rooms, so the prospect of a book that we could do together, in the comfort of our own home, was very intriguing. We got our laptop out, chrome cast to our big screen TV, and settled in to an evening of togetherness and intrigue.Alas, by the12th Chapter, we'd lost both the teenage boys to their electronics, and by Chapter 15, my husband had also thrown in the towel... Mind you, it took us less than 35 minutes to get to get to Chapter 15, and a meaningful percent of that time was spent cutting out pieces to one of the clues.THE GOOD NEWS- the illustrations in this book are quite engaging, creative, and definitely fit the mystery "vintage" of the tale- the concept of the story is interesting (more about the story below)- several of the puzzles are very clever and fun to solve with creative tricks on the eye and/or unique twist of the brain to arrive at the conclusion- there is an online forum on the website where additional questions are answered and sometimes clarifications are supplied.THE BAD NEWS- We didn't want to cheat - so we never looked at the pages throughout the book - we focused on the chapters we'd uncovered. Because the opening instructions are so poor, we completely missed that there are pages in the back of the book that can be used for the "cutting out" clues (don't want to leave any spoilers, so I'll just say that). To the authors - if you are going to provide additional resources in the back of the book - somewhere in the instructions, that'd be great to know.- We also didn't want to cheat by looking things up on the internet, we assumed that we could use the Trip 1907 website, and the book, and we'd have everything we needed. In at least one instance, the website directs you to a YouTube video (it took us a little while to figure out this was on purpose and "legal" - and several chapters later there were other things that, unless you are literally an encyclopedia of all things, you would need to use resources online to assist you with solving the puzzles. This would also be good to include in the opening instructions, that it's Ok to use resources online, or all of the necessary resources could be included in the story or in the "appendix" (again, no spoilers here).- The clues and clueing system - in some instances, the first clue was just a restatement of the information that was obvious in the story, which was frustrating to use "sanity points" to get a clue, and then have it be useless.- The internet component adds some narrative which is riddled with typos and difficult sentence structure making it hard to read. That's too bad. Unfortunately, this narrative is also fully disconnected from the puzzles, after about 5 chapters of reading and searching for clues in the text, we realized we didn't really need to read any of it as everything we needed was in the book, and on the "solve" page of the website.I agree with other reviewers (not on Amazon), that you want to applaud the effort and creativity, and for the price, I might recommend purchasing the book just to see how many of the puzzles you can solve and enjoy the illustrations - but expect to be frustrated and sometimes left bewildered (even after you've solved a puzzle which robs you of the satisfaction that you got it). Perhaps the biggest frustration is that good testing and honest feedback before publication could have resulted in a little editing and a few tweaks and this would have been amazing. Instead, it's just a mixed bag at best.

Really fun Adventure book with puzzles I wish it was a little less reliant on the website so that you could do it while traveling or whatever but it’s really fun!

This was so interesting, I did have a really hard time deconstructing the book though.

The book is done well; the puzzles are of varying difficulties, the artwork fantastic. There are about 45 puzzles in there, some creative ones. You will need access to the website to submit your answers. This requires an email, password and a name.
On the pager to enter the answer, there is a help system where it deducts sanity points for a weak and and a strong hint. There is a "help" forum moderated by the creator that is of limited help.
I got completely stuck on chapter 26. The forum is no help, the moderator does not help. I can't surpass this and thus the rest of the book is useless since you need the online part to solve many puzzles. and the website makes you solve things in order.
The book is a five--star item; it just that when you are stuck, that's it. This is incomprehensible to me. This is a puzzle book, not the nuclear launch codes. At some point you just want to know the answer.
Like with any puzzle book, you get stuck occasionally, but chapter26 was the end of the line. For no good reason; what a disappointment.
EDIT:
Other players have helped me in the forum ; after four weeks I got past this deadlock.I have upped the rating to 4 thanks to the community support.

It has a thing for everybody - an amazing and intriguing story, wonderful images, which, honestly, are a piece of art, and last but not least - tuff puzzles, that you need to really think in order to solve them. The book is absolutely stunning. Loved it way more than I thought I will and if you like art, storylines and puzzles combined - it is definitely for you, don't even hesitate!

I do a lot of puzzle games and books so I'm no novice. This book started out great, but then the puzzles started getting more challenging (as to be expected). None of them were unsolvable, but the hint system is worthless. You get two hints for each puzzle and they cost you "Sanity Points". Hardly any of those hints helped. In almost every case, I had already figured out where the hint was pointing me. There is an online forum, but they speak as cryptically as a the puzzle book itself. I solved most of the puzzle just through pure force of will and perseverance, making it not so fun. I don't want to obsess for days over trying to resolve a puzzle just so I can move on. When I did resolve a puzzle it would all finally come together and make sense. None of them were a "stretch". I also did not like the point system. You start with a 100 "Sanity Points" which is the maximum. You get two points for solving a puzzle, but it costs you 4 and 6 points for the "hints" which for the most part were useless. I ran out of these points towards the end and had to go back and restart the book under a new user name. Lastly, there are A LOT of Red Herrings in this book. Not necessarily a bad thing, but just be forewarned. Overall, I would recommend this puzzle book to the most seasoned puzzle enthusiast, and I do plan on doing the other books in this series now that I know how the author thinks.

I recently completed Journal 29: Interactive Game Book. This Trip 1907 book shares some similarities in it's unique, core design to solve challenging puzzles on paper and submit answers online. Be ready to think outside of the box :)

Frustrating

Love these type of interactive puzzle games, however found Trip 1907 to be lacking in quality puzzles. The most frustrating part was confusing and misleading instructions. It does have a better storyline then most do.

I was yet another looking for a book to fill the hole left after completing the two Journal29 books (I'd recommend getting those books first) and although I have a few small issues with a few of the puzzles, the overall package is definitely worth it, enough for me to buy the sequel which I have yet to start. The narrative is light and predictable but ties everything together nicely and the discussion on the forum is generally useful for the times I needed extra hints or nudging in the right direction.
Recommended book for those that enjoyed the concept of Journal29.

Richtig gutes Exit-Game-Buch
Reviewed in Germany on September 25, 2018

Not that great
Reviewed in Canada on June 1, 2019
We are big fans of these types of books (love the journal 29 series), but this book was just weak. The writing is boring (and honestly you can skip all the flavour text except for one puzzle). And the most important part, the puzzles, were very weak and many did not follow normal logic or reasoning. Very disappointing.
