I am a roller derby fresh meat skater. A few months ago at practice, while I was NOT wearing any butt pads, I fell right on my tailbone during a hitting drill. It was painful for several weeks, then mostly annoying, and extremely slow to heal. It still is not quite right. I knew it would be horrible if I fell on it again, so in preparation for my first practice after the injury, I ordered these shorts.

I chose these over other options because I ONLY wanted the three tailbone pads, and I loved that I was able to easily pop out all the rest. This means I can wear them under my tights and running skirt that I skate in, and it's really not that noticeable. I was afraid of looking like the girl in Ice Princess, but these shorts are not like that at all. It is a bit annoying to put on an extra layer, but right now, it's worth it. In choosing between the medium and large, on the advice of a friend, I chose the medium because I wanted to be sure the pads fit securely. If you're not sure, I do think the smaller size is the way to go.

I have been wearing these for months and was withholding judgment until I really fell on my butt again, but now I have fallen on them at least twice and can say that they work! Even with my tailbone still not quite healed, the times I have fallen on my butt wearing these, I've been able to get right back up and keep going. I wasn't even noticeably sore after practice. I will probably wear these for a couple more months until I am really good at falling forward. I would recommend the Bumsaver to anyone who is somewhat new to skating and doesn't want to risk a tailbone setback like the one I had. Tailbones can take forever to heal. With all the hard work you're putting in, these shorts are definitely worth the money and slight inconvenience to keep you skating!

I bought these to use with snowboarding. I have broken my tailbone and sacrum and just can't go without padding.

These fit perfectly. They are like stretchy biker shorts with pockets of foam. The foam is removable. I took it out the hip padding. I'm hoping to double up on the tailbone padding. The foam is only about 1/2 inch thick and seems to be a simple foam. I like that the padding goes higher than the tailbone to protect my sacrum as well.

These fit easily under my snowboard pants. And they're comfortable too. I can easily move in them. I don't feel restricted at all.

I bought a size small. I have a 27 in waist and 38 in hips. They fit perfectly, and probably with a bit of room to spare since they are stretchy.

I bought a pair of Burton's Red protection pads but had to return them - they had loads of hip padding and hardly any tailbone coverage. Not to mention they wouldnt fit under my pants. Could not remove those pads either. And they were at least twice as much!

I will update after they get some usage on the slopes.

UPDATE 1.15.15

I have now hit the mountain twice with these...Ouch, my poor bum. While these definitely helped (no breaks!), I think I could have used more padding personally. The padded locations were slightly bruised while the areas with gaps had the biggest bruises I've ever had...the kind where a lump forms - the hematoma bruise. If I had only fallen a few times it would have been better, but I pushed myself and made it worse. I think these shorts are perfect for the person who might fall a few times, but not for the one who will be falling all day on hard surfaces. My favorite part about these shorts is still that you can remove padding and how they fit! Now if only I could add a little more in a few spots!

The description does not specify the thickness of the foam and picture is misleading looks lot thicker than actual. The thickness is half inch or less. tailbone proctector even thiner and not much of use. I bought this because I fell down last week on ice on bum/tailbone while learning skating. This will save some bruises but not really your bum or tailbone or impact on back bone. The hip gurd should be good enough if are falling on side. This kind of bum saver should have atleast one inch think pad at bum and tail bone to save bum or tailbone. One more thing I want to add is the item is way costly (around $50) than it should be.

I'm a 45-year old just getting into skateboarding with my kid. Before I bought these, my hips looked like the milky way galaxy - giant black and blue bruises. NO more. I also took them snowboarding and didnt spend the next month in the chiropracter. great force transfer and just enough, but not too much padding, so that you can wear them under gym shorts, khaki shorts or snowboarding pants.

Pros:
You can customize it taking out some of the protector through little holes that it has on the inside.
The material is good.
It's the only bumsaver with a short version.

Cons:
Although I followed the sizing chart, they are a little bit tight.
The protections aren't as thick as they seem to be on the picture.
My main objective for these was to protect my tailbone while snowboarding. It offers a certain level of protection for the tailbone area, but I believe a roller hockey girdle would be sturdier.
