I purchased this meter January of this year (2011) from shopblt. After unpacking it, I loved the way it felt, looked, and was pleased with myself that I was able to get pretty much all the features I wanted in a meter rated true RMS, and with good accuracy for much less than a Fluke.

Getting it to work was another story. I couldn't get any reading at all from this meter measuring AC amps with the clamp. Ironically, DC amps worked fine (intermittently) but when I switched it to AC, it literally ignored whatever current was flowing in the circuit under test. (FYI, I have been an electronics tech for nearly 30 years, and know how to use the meter...) After a call to Triplett, they verified that the selector switch was intermittent, and since it was less than a week old, they recommended I get it replaced from the vendor, which I did. Shopblt was good about it and sent me a replacement as soon as my defectived one was RMA'ed and received at their warehouse. The replacement arrived, and worked good on all ranges...everything seemed to indicate I had just been unlucky enough to receive a bad one.

The saga continues... I use this meter about once a week, so it hasn't been used hard (I haven't even gotten it greasy or scratche yet!) but it doesn't get "left sitting around to rot" either. A few weeks ago, (on my SECOND METER, remember) I noticed the only way to get an accurate reading on it was to turn in on and cycle the rotary swith over and over half a dozen times and wait for the display to settle down, then I could get accurate readings with it. Today it was so bad, I got "OL" displayed on it on several ranges with nothing connected! "OL" on the 1000 AMP scale with in clamped around NOTHING.... REALLY???!!?? Arghhh...!

This meter works great. It is a little sensitive for static electricity but if you leave the test leads hooked up to the lines you are trying to get a reading on it will give a good reading. The case quality is really cheap and not good quality.

I needed to replace an antique R.S. multi-meter, at the same time wanting to expand my amperage measuring capabilities. I just inherited a diesel truck with some cold starting issues, and this meter seemed a good partner to tackle the job.
The AC/DC amp ranges are 400A and 1000A and the hold feature allows you to clamp it in place, energize the system under test, then read the peak. Glo-plugs can be corporately and individually tested to compare for benchmark differences, helping to determine if all are working, and working together properly. Alternator output current measured during idle in loaded and unloaded conditions. Battery output current measured during glo-plug initiation, and then start up sequence to quantify the delivery of the Cold Cranking Amps that the batteries are rated for. (They should deliver at least half of the individual CCA rating for 15 seconds or be replaced.) When the engine starts you can see the reversal of the current flow and measure the rate of current going back into the battery, indicating whether it is properly recharging the batteries. My diesel system has two batteries connected in parallel and the DC amp-clamp helped to determine if both were contributing equally to the starting sequence, and receiving re-charge current equally. This helps to quickly determine if one battery is weaker and the other is doing more than it's share of the work, or resolve wiring & connectivity issues.

The meter comes with a set of test leads that are PVC, but still remain reasonably flexible down to 10 deg. F (coldest I've had it). AC amps readings seem very accurate - when testing a CF bulb stamped 390mA AC that's exactly what it read (with the help of a X10 line separator - which multiplies small readings like this to 3.9 amps so the meter can read it).

I've been using this meter off and on for a while now but I don't have anything to compare it to. If I had used other meters it would help me rate this meter but I do have some problems with its operation.

1) The light only stays on for a few seconds when I would like it to stay on for at least minutes until I stop using the meter and then go off with the meter or till I specifically shut it off.

2) The display has little tiny symbols on the display that are difficult to read to know what mode the thing is in.

3) Very hard to get the thing to stabilize and sample a voltage where I feel confident with the reading. Just not well implemented.

I guess for the money you get what you paid for. Don't think I would buy again but rather look for a meter with good reviews?
