John Christopher's Tripod series has become a classic in science fiction, a haunting and often grim look at a future where free will is gone and the Earth has stagnated under alien rule. While the books aren't amazing, they are solid and very interesting.
"When the Tripods Came" is a haunting look at an alien invasion that no one could have expected. In the not-too-distant future, strange three-legged machines descend on Earth, only to be destroyed. Then a mysterious TV show mesmerizes many people, followed by a second wave of Tripods -- these welcomed by the eager citizens of Earth. Laurie and his friends must try to escape....
"The White Mountains" takes place long after the prequel. Earth has lost disease, war, hunger, misery... and life. Though people go about their everyday activities, the enormous alien Tripods have effectively stagnated human civilization -- through the mind-controlling Caps. Thirteen-year-old Will is creeped-out by the Caps (which has evolved into a rite of passage) and when he learns of a human stronghold unaffected by the Tripods, he and his friends set out to find them.
"The City of Gold And Lead" is the destination of Will, Henry and Beanpole, in the Games that are held every year for young men. The victor will be taken to the City of the Tripods, and may gain valuable information about these alien invaders. The problem is, when a person enters the City, he doesn't return again. And the information Will finds may be the most dangerous and valuable yet.
"The Pool of Fire" wraps up the series effectively. Will has made his escape and is hurrying back with a terrifying revelation: The invaders are planning to effectively kill off the human race by changing the atmosphere.

This is a well loved series from my Childhood; I was pleased my 12 year old grandson enjoyed it as much as I did as a child. He was already reading well above his level, and into Science Fiction, Fantasy, and adventure books. This was exactly what he liked. Skimming through it was a great nostalgic romp through my childhood memories and one of my influences as a child into Science, Physics and Astronomy.

I found these books on Ebay (the whole set plus a 5th bonus book) for $4.99. However, the books didn't have a slipcover (box) with them, and I really wanted the actual "BOXED" set. This item was described in the listing as "Boxed Set" in each section (I took screen shots) so I figured I'd pay the $27+ to get the set, new, in the original box. Well, it arrived... without the slipcase, and with a note saying "books only". Had I known before ordering that the box wasn't included I could have saved myself a hunk of money and just ordered the set I found on ebay. Not happy. >.< The way Amazon lists the item, you can buy it with "one click" for the price it shows, from the seller it shows, but unless you actually CLICK on the seller, and read their full description of the item, you can't really tell what you are getting. After going to the seller page, she clearly lists this as a "used" item with no slipcase. Too bad the MAIN listing doesn't tell you that to begin with. I feel like I got jipped. I got 4 used books, no slipcase, and paid $30. Could have had 5 books, new, with no slipcase for $5. *sigh* Because I really hate leaving less than positive feedback, I will say the following: The books look brand new, they are in excellent condition. They shipped SUPER fast, and arrived well packaged and undamaged (which with my postal service, is a miracle). The books even smell new. That said, I am disappointed but can't fully blame the seller- from now on I will click on the item and seller's store and not rely on Amazon to tell me what I'm getting. =/ I don't like the way Amazon lists the prime eligible stuff available with "one click" shopping... because it does leave the buyer uninformed about the item they are getting when it's coming from a third party seller.

Read this series in Boy's Life as a kid and couldn't pass up the chance to grab these. Were as fun as I remembered and a quick read. Recommend them to any kids or young adults who like adventure and fun.

If you've never heard of the Tripods series and are a Sci-Fi / Fantasy book fan, then you will enjoy these books. They are hard to track down, and I was lucky enough to find them here on Amazon. I became a fan of the story like many, by watching the BBC series on PBS when I was young. I have always wanted to read the books, and recently found out the series was released in the UK and Australia. So, I started looking for them again. Anyway, they did not disappoint. It's written from the point of view of Will, the main character through the original 3 books, "The White Mountains," "The City of Gold and Lead," and "the Pool of Fire." The fourth book is a pre-quel that was written 10 years after the original trilogy. I'm actually in the middle of that book now.
The story is written to make you think, and there are several metaphors for modern life throughout the series.
I highly recommend this to anyone who's a fan of books like "Ender's Game." It has the same feel.
