Stress-Free Travel, Three AC Outlets and USB Charging
When you’re on the go, outlets are often in short supply. The TRAVELER3USB offers an easy solution; it provides three 120V AC outlets to power your devices while requiring only one 120V AC wall outlet. And along with extra outlets, you’ll get surge protection and two USB charging ports. When it's time to move, the power cord wraps securely around the body and the plug tucks neatly away to prevent its prongs from scratching your equipment.
The TRAVELER3USB provides three 120V AC outlets, including one that will accommodate a bulky transformer without blocking remaining outlets, and an 18 in. power cord with right-angle plug. This gives you the ability to protect your notebook computer and two peripherals no matter where you plug in for power.
In addition to providing your notebook computer and peripherals with portable power protection, the TRAVELER3USB offers the convenience of USB charging. Two USB ports provide a total of 2.1 amps for fast charging of smartphones, tablets, MP3 players and other portable devices whenever the TRAVELER3USB is plugged into a wall outlet.
Surge Suppression, Improved Performance and Diagnostic Capability
The TRAVELER3USB provides a powerful 1050 joules of surge suppression to prevent even the strongest surges from damaging your valuable electronics. And remember, the higher the joule rating, the greater the protection. This surge protector includes Line to Neutral (L-N), Neutral to Ground (N-G) and Line to Ground (L-G) line surge suppression.
Various electromagnetic and radio sources can cause disruptive interference on the AC line. This line noise is a common cause of performance problems and data loss. The TRAVELER3USB incorporates technology that filters out disruptive line noise, preventing it from affecting your valuable equipment and data.
A green diagnostic LED verifies that surge protection is present, enabling you to recognize power problems before they affect your valuable equipment. If this green PROTECTED LED ever goes out, simply return the TRAVELER3USB to Tripp Lite for a free replacement.
Lifetime Warranty and Why Choose Tripp Lite?
The TRAVELER3USB has a lifetime product warranty and a rapid-response, no-questions-asked replacement policy that's unmatched in the industry. And it's simple: Ultimate Lifetime Insurance coverage begins the moment you purchase the TRAVELER3USB, with no forms to fill out or send in.

I bought this so my college student could protect their computer as they moved around campus, and charge their USB devices also. In use a couple months. I've used Tripplite surge protectors for years, and recently researched the latest UL 1449 edition 3 changes (ok, that edition came out in 2008; sorry for the delay). My general surge protector buying advice:
1. Look carefully for a low number for Voltage Protection Rating (VPR, which is new terminology in the edition 3 spec). This is often called the let-thru or clamping voltage. Lower is better; less voltage from the surge reaching your equipment. 400 Volts VPR is the best i've seen. TRAVELER3USB has it. I don't know how critical it is to protect all three wires (Line to Neutral, Line to Ground, Neutral to Ground) but i'd rather have them all protected. TRAVELER3USB protects them all at 400 V.
2. Get high enough Joules rating. Some surge protectors are only 200-780 Joules. I'd buy 500-1000 Joules if the price was low. I'm satisfied with 1050 Joules in the TRAVELER3USB.
3. Don't buy something unless you check 1 and 2 above. No specs? Don't buy. Junk likes to hide specs. Sometimes you may have to check the manufacturer's site to find all the specs. Tip: it's a good sign, though not a quality guarantee, if the online description and/or back of the product (sometimes visible in online pictures) says Type 3 SPD (Surge Protective Device), Voltage Protection Rating X (L-N, L-G, N-G). Type 3, SPD and VPR are terminology new to edition 3 of UL 1449. 2nd edition and earlier were called Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors and they had a less rigorous test. You have to trust the manufacturer that they have a legitimate, not counterfeit, UL 1449 rating.
4. Indicator light that protection is still working (the MOV's aren't burned out).
The Tripplite TRAVELER3USB is good on all of the above. It also has protected equipment insurance and a limited lifetime warranty. If the "Protected" light ever goes out on the Tripplite, I plan to call for a warranty replacement (not 100% sure they'll replace it, but I thought I saw an Amazon review somewhere that said they did).
If you are an Amazon Prime member, and don't need portability but would like more outlets, consider the APC P8U2, 8-Outlet Surge Protector 2630 Joules with USB Charger Ports. It has a better/higher Joule rating, but the VPR is not as good: L-N rating of 400V, L-G and N-G 500V.
You want a surge suppressor to have a 'fail-to-close' safety feature … oversimplified, "to stop power to your devices once surge protection expires." (Alternate related terms for this feature include 'fail-to-safe' or 'fail-to-shutdown' or 'automatic shutdown technology.') The product specifications sheet for this product, as well as the product description here, specifies it DOES have 'automatic shutdown technology.'
Oversimplified, a suppressor doesn't 'kick-in' until the voltage exceeds its 'clamping voltage/specification.' (Alternative related terms include 'UL1449 let-through' and 'voltage protection rating.') So you would want that number to be lower (to be better). Relying on various online sources, it appears safe to say that 330 volts is common on better suppressors, 400 volts is considered merely adequate, 500 volts is considered to be borderline inadequate. There is NO mention of the clamping voltage/specification for this product on this webpage. However, it IS specified on the back of the device as well as in the product specifications sheet: 400V.
The product IS UL-listed and DOES bear a UL holographic sticker. For a suppressor to obtain a UL listing & sticker, the maker must submit sample units to UL for testing that assures the device meets the UL 1449 standard for suppressors.
I would have preferred more joules and a lower clamping specification, of course, but this was the best-specification high-quality device I could find for the particular application … I needed a suppressor … that I could plug into a GFCI outlet … AND would also clear the kitchen sink garbage disposal on/off switch immediately to the left of, and sharing the faceplate with, the GFCI outlet. I've plugged an espresso-maker and a coffee bean grinder into it. The short cord and a 'strip' with just a couple of outlets works well for that.
1050 joules, 400v clamp, auto-shutdown and Tripp-Lite quality, taken together, ought be good enough to protect well those two devices.
For my application, the USB ports are moot.

I read a few reviews saying the USB ports do not work well on this device but I have an Aukey 5 port charger I travel with so the USB charging of this device is not needed for me.
