Product Description

Style:Portable 12K BTU

The SRCOOL12K SmartRack 12,000 BTU 120V Portable Air Conditioning Unit pumps 12,000 BTU of cooling power into your IT environment to prevent shutdowns, malfunctions and failures caused by overheating or fluctuating temperatures. Part of the SRCOOL line, this compact, portable unit is perfect for server rooms and other IT environments with heat-sensitive equipment in areas that facility air conditioning can’t reach.

The self-contained SRCOOL12K is capable of cooling a small room using its louvered vent. A built-in evaporator expels the condensed water through the directional exhaust duct, eliminating the need for a drain tube, drain pan or water collection tank.

You can also use the included flexible tube to aim the cold air precisely where it’s needed most, such as an overheated rack enclosure or an equipment hot spot. The SRCOOL12K also dehumidifies and filters the air, providing better air quality that can enhance equipment performance with little power consumption.

Designed for quick, simple installation, the SRCOOL12K rolls into place on durable built-in casters and plugs into a standard 15-amp outlet. It’s programmed to restart automatically after power failures, and you can set the built-in timer for unattended shutdown and startup.

By installing the optional SRCOOLNET remote management accessory(sold separately), you can also monitor temperatures, receive alerts, review logs and control settings from anywhere via SNMP, web browser, SSH or telnet.

Very disappointed in the short life this unit has. It performed well for 18 months, but the exhaust fan apparently was made of plastic and the fan blades all fell off after exhausting hot air, just six months after the warranty expired, rendering the unit useless.

What this picture shows is the broken fan blades sitting at the bottom of the exhaust chute.

After reading other reviews here, apparently Tripp-Lite does not sell replacement parts for this unit.

We purchased the Tripp-Lite Air cooler for our small firm (15 people) when we upgraded from 2 to 4 servers. They are located in a small closet with our phone switching and it was getting warm inside the closet even with an exhaust fan into the plenum. This is probalby more than we need, but it really works well, and I investigated just about every small cooler on the market, and this was the best cost and size I could find. Also it did not need a drain as the design gets rid of condensation using the heat generated by the unit, not the case with most others I reviewed. Installation of the hot air hose into the plenum was done by our contractor while doing some other minor work on our office, and the start up and operation was seconds after opening the box. Only comlaint is its size, about 2 computers high.

The mfg. is a well known company and the set up was really easy. And the cost ($650 range) was way below the next level cooling unit. We orderd the unit through Amazon (who knew after all the special web sites I went to) and it was there in 3 days. Great vendor follow up also.

Concerned. We bought two of these units for a server room 8'x10'=80 square feet with 2" thick insulation. In that room we have 2 Dell r900 servers. We used to cool the room with an 8k window unit and I bought 2 of these to load balance the cooling, thinking it would be a breeze with 24k BTU. Today it hit 93 degrees here in SC and I got an alert from our watchdog. The server room was 100, then 102, 104, 108. I rushed over there and both units were blowing hot air. They are vented through a window. I had to open the door and put a fan in the door to blow the hot air out.

Strangely enough, when I cooled the room down, the A/Cs started blowing cool again. So here is the deal, when the units get hot, they will stop cooling then the room temp will continuously climb. So when we needed them the most, they let us down. An A/C that does not work when it is hot is a lame horse. At the moment we plan to go back to a window unit and then use one of these as a backup.

Update 10/16/2015: I replaced both of these units with a 8k window unit and it cools the room fine. Three months later I pulled one out to use as a dehumidifier and when plugging it in it read E2. Power cycling it did nothing. I emailed support and they had me call Advanced Product Support. They explained that though we had bought it 8 months ago and it only ran for 2 of those, the unit was manufactured 14 months ago and technically it was out of warranty. They would do nothing about it and then asked if there was anything else they could help me with.

Summary: The worst air conditioner that I have ever owned with virtually no warranty. We spent $1200 on two of these and one lasted two months of runtime, set on the shelf another 6 and was dead when I powered it back on. They would not do anything about it. Even when it ran, it would not cool an 80 square foot room with 2 Dell R900 servers in it.

My office is upstairs facing West with approximately 1500 watts of equipment heat that needs cooling. On triple digit days, like we've been having here for the past couple weeks, my office will never get below 85-90 with the central AC alone. So I must have supplemental cooling. I've been using an LG 12000 BTU (LP1200dxr) unit since 2010, and it's a wonderful unit, and can cool my office down to a crisp 60 deg, even during triple digit weather. But we needed it for another upstairs room, where the kids sleep, since the LG is very quiet it made sense to move it to that room. So I went shopping for a new unit for my office. :)

I almost purchased another consumer unit, but I ended up with the Tripp Lite SRCOOL12K for a couple reasons.

1. The cool air duct for spot cooling
2. I plan to use it in either a dedicated equipment room or garage in next house, and this unit seemed more suited for those environments.

Initial Thoughts...

The Good

- Unit looks good and blends in well with modern office equipment
- I like the orientation of unit and placement of the cool air vent and exhaust hose.
- Dual air filters are great. My old LG unit only had a single air filter, and the inner radiator would always need a lot of cleaning at the end of the season. I have a feeling this Tripp Lite unit will be lower maintenance.
- VERY powerful cooling. My LG unit was also 12000 BTU, but this Tripp Lite feels much more powerful. It seemed to cool down my office in half the time, and the spot cooling has enough air flow that it could double as a weed blower.

The Bad

- Lack of remote control is a bummer. Especially given the way the fan works see below)
- The unit is VERY loud!
