12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioning Unit with Network Management Support
This air conditioning unit solves cooling problems where it isn't practical, efficient or affordable to install or expand computer room air conditioning (CRAC) or HVAC capacity. When IT equipment is installed in an improvised space or new equipment overwhelms existing cooling systems, additional cooling is required to ensure reliable performance and prevent damage. This air conditioning unit provides the cooling capacity to solve heat-related problems without requiring a major capital expenditure, a disruptive construction project, installation assistance from costly specialists or time-consuming maintenance. It's ideal for sectors like education and small/medium business, where budgets are tight and purpose-built IT spaces are a luxury.
Common Applications
This air conditioning unit can cool a rack enclosure, a hot spot or a small room. It also dehumidifies and filters the air.
Cool a Rack Enclosure or Hot Spot:
The 6 feet. (1.8 meter) flexible cooling duct directs cold air where it's needed most. If you connect the cooling duct near the top of a rack enclosure door, cold air sinks for even temperature distribution. You can also cool a hot spot, such as an overheating server, blade chassis or PoE switch, by connecting the cooling duct to the air intake.
Cool a Small Room:
The louvered cooling vent provides general area cooling for a small room (up to 500 square feet), such as a network closet, server room or MDF (main distribution frame). This is especially useful for rooms that lack adequate built-in cooling, a common problem in spaces that were not originally designed to house IT equipment.
Unattended Operation and Optional Network Management
Loaded with IT-friendly features that allow it to operate for extended periods without user intervention, this air conditioning unit is ideal for remote installations and other low-maintenance applications. After you plug it in and turn it on, you can focus on other tasks without interruption while it keeps things cool. The built-in evaporator prevents condensation from accumulating, which means that you never need to empty a water collection tank. If there's a power failure, the unit restarts automatically with its most recent settings, so you don't need to make a site visit to get things running again. You can also set the unit to turn on and off automatically. And if you want to keep a closer eye on cooling, the optional SRCOOLNET network management module allows you to monitor and control every aspect of the unit's operation from any location without leaving your desk.
There are two ways to manage this air conditioning unit:
1) Use the push-button control panel, LEDs and digital display to change settings, automate operation and monitor temperature locally.
2) Add the optional SRCOOLNET network management module to monitor temperatures, change settings, define threshold warnings, receive alerts, access logs and automate operation over the network via SNMP, Web, SSH or telnet. Using Tripp Lite's free PowerAlert NMS software, you can manage multiple air conditioning units from a central location and single interface. The SRCOOLNET also includes an ENVIROSENSE temperature, humidity and dry contact sensor. The sensor allows cooling operation to be based on temperature readings up to 12 feet away from the air conditioning unit, providing more precise cooling control.
Close-Coupled Cooling and Engineered for IT Environments
Installing air conditioning units closer to heat sources reduces distances required for delivery of cold air and removal of hot air, using less electricity to power fans. Close-coupled cooling also focuses cold air where it's actually needed instead of wasting energy to cool the entire room when that isn't the goal. This makes close-coupled air conditioning units more efficient than air conditioners installed at the room's perimeter or outside the room entirely, saving energy and reducing operating costs. Because close-coupled cooling is modular, it also allows you to reconfigure cooling on the fly to handle new equipment or newly detected hot spots.
The difference between consumer-grade air conditioners and SmartRack cooling solutions is like the difference between home computers and purpose-built servers. Although it may be possible to install server software on a home computer, it will never have the convenience, manageability, performance and resilience required for a high-availability IT environment.

Very disappointed in the short life this unit has. It performed well for 18 months, but the exhaust fan apparently was made of plastic and the fan blades all fell off after exhausting hot air, just six months after the warranty expired, rendering the unit useless.
What this picture shows is the broken fan blades sitting at the bottom of the exhaust chute.
After reading other reviews here, apparently Tripp-Lite does not sell replacement parts for this unit.

Style Name: Portable 12K BTU
Concerned. We bought two of these units for a server room 8'x10'=80 square feet with 2" thick insulation. In that room we have 2 Dell r900 servers. We used to cool the room with an 8k window unit and I bought 2 of these to load balance the cooling, thinking it would be a breeze with 24k BTU. Today it hit 93 degrees here in SC and I got an alert from our watchdog. The server room was 100, then 102, 104, 108. I rushed over there and both units were blowing hot air. They are vented through a window. I had to open the door and put a fan in the door to blow the hot air out.
Strangely enough, when I cooled the room down, the A/Cs started blowing cool again. So here is the deal, when the units get hot, they will stop cooling then the room temp will continuously climb. So when we needed them the most, they let us down. An A/C that does not work when it is hot is a lame horse. At the moment we plan to go back to a window unit and then use one of these as a backup.
Update 10/16/2015: I replaced both of these units with a 8k window unit and it cools the room fine. Three months later I pulled one out to use as a dehumidifier and when plugging it in it read E2. Power cycling it did nothing. I emailed support and they had me call Advanced Product Support. They explained that though we had bought it 8 months ago and it only ran for 2 of those, the unit was manufactured 14 months ago and technically it was out of warranty. They would do nothing about it and then asked if there was anything else they could help me with.
Summary: The worst air conditioner that I have ever owned with virtually no warranty. We spent $1200 on two of these and one lasted two months of runtime, set on the shelf another 6 and was dead when I powered it back on. They would not do anything about it. Even when it ran, it would not cool an 80 square foot room with 2 Dell R900 servers in it.
