Product Description

Tripp Lite's SmartOnline SU1500XL on-line, double conversion UPS protects critical server, networking or telecommunications equipment from blackouts, brownouts, voltage fluctuations and surges. This large-capacity 1.5kVA/1200W UPS continuously converts incoming AC to DC, then back to perfect sine wave AC output at 120V AC (+/-2%). It removes harmonic distortion, fast electrical impulses, frequency fluctuations and other hard-to-solve power problems not addressed by other UPS systems. True sine wave output and zero transfer time provide guaranteed compatibility with all equipment types. It includes 6 UPS-supported outlets. Two load banks, each with 3 outlets, can be independently controlled via a software interface to selectively reboot remote equipment or automatically shed less critical loads to extend battery runtime for the most critical equipment. Battery backup time can be extended with the addition of multiple external battery packs. This unit includes a slot for an internal SNMP/web card, plus DB9 enhanced serial monitoring port for unattended shutdown, remote control and monitoring of UPS system and power data. The HID-compliant USB interface enables integration with built-in power management and auto shutdown features of Windows and Mac OS X. It also includes Tripp Lite's PowerAlert UPS Power Management Software and is compatible with Tripp Lite's Watchdog Service Monitoring/Rebooting Software.

I live in an area that often loses power during storms. I have a Dewalt gas power generator that I use as a backup. I have an expensive computer system and need to run it off the generator. I spoke with Dewalt technical support and they do not recommend running computes off a generator. So I need to "clean" the power line. After several days research, this was the best choice. It is a dual converter that does not bye-pass the system at any time. AC to DC, then DC back to A.C. Output, clean power. It comes with monitoring software that is very good. It can monitor the input and output frequency and voltage. The documentation recommends not using it off a generator (?), but I did not find this a problem. The software on the disk did not support Windows 7, not a problem went to their web site and down loaded the latest version that supports Windows 7. Also spoke to technical support on setting up the software. I give them the best rating for technical support. He gave me a ticket number for future support that would refer me back him if needed.
Used it for a week now, here are the results. Power company input 123.5 V, 59.8 Hz, Output 119.9 & 60 Hz. Gas Generator input 113 V & 62.1 Hz, Tripp Lite SU1500XL output 119.9 V and 61.1 Hz. The results fluctuated, but this was the worst case. Yes the dual fans are noticeable, but can live with it knowing my computer system is protected. Technical support help me set up the software that will shut down my computer if there is a total loss of power, then it will shut itself off, then when it sensors power again it will turn on and reboot the computer. (have not tested this scenario yet). Recommend this system.

I'll begin with my conclusion: This is the best value out there right now for a true on-line ups. Nothing else comes close. I had two requirements when UPS shopping:

I want true sine-wave output, because that's what the regular utility power is. Those are advertise a "modified sine wave" are lying to you - it isn't a "modified sine wave". That's some kind of baloney marketing word. It's a PWM square wave. "Modified sine wave" = PWM square wave. A PWM square wave is an ugly thing indeed - you don't want it. It can cause your speakers to buzz and hum, amongst other symptoms, and it's very hard on your electronic devices. It'll cause the cheapo china power supply in most desktop pc's to fail if you run for any significant time on battery power. No thanks! Give me a proper sine wave, like the utility company.

I also want an online double-conversion device. Here's why. All the cheap low-dollar standby UPS's have a tiny battery that runs for 5 or 10 minutes. It's that way for a reason. They've designed the inverter so cheaply, that it doesn't have proper cooling - if you run for longer than 10 minutes on the inverter, it overheats and shuts down! If you hack it to install a larger battery for longer run time, you'll fry the inverter! An online double-conversion device like this has large beefy heatsinks and fans, since it's always running off the inverter. There is no heat/time constraint. As an added benefit, the inverter of an online UPS, since it's running 24/7 all the time, is designed with high quality components. The inverter in a cheapo standby UPS contains very cheap junky chinese components that don't last - the inverter only gets used a few minutes each year after all, when the power flickers or goes out, so it doesn't need to be built to last.

This is of the most affordable, double conversion UPS available.

This product is of high quality build, and of course its performance is good as well. Output power is very clean and consistent.

Of course as with other double conversion UPS, the cooling fans on this device is rather loud, and they run at all times, even if the load is powered off, and even if the UPS is powered off. They can only be shutoff if the UPS is powered off and unplugged.

For those who plan to mod the fans there are a couple things to know first. They are standard 80mm fans. They have a proprietary pin connector and wire arrangement. The new fan RPM can't be too low or the system will detect a fault.

Unfortunately after around 5 years, both (I have 2 Tripp Lite 1500XL's) died at around 2 months apart. The fault lights flash on both units and they refuse to work, even with the batteries replaced.

Purchased on 3/1/2016; placed in service 03/2/2016; dead with a battery failure on 04/02/2016. I will post an update on warranty service after it is running again. The fan noise is not an issue for me. I run this along with a few servers; the servers make much more noise than this unit. I find it to be quiet. I would not want it in a bedroom, but for an office utility closet, it is fine.

I purchased this because I live in the country and our power goes out, A LOT. I have a gaming rig that consists of 2 23" gaming monitors an XBOX ONE and a $900 gaming computer that has a 700w power supply with an awesome sound system attached. Because of the power outages caused my computer to crash and it was unable to recover so I had to reinstall the operating system (not happy) and reinstall all the software. I got this and I had a power outage that lasted for about a half hour and I was playing a game at the time and never noticed till my room mate came in and asked how i was still on my computer. After this i did a test to see how long it would last. with every thing running at once it was 45min before everything shut down because I ran out of juce in the batteries. it was totally worth it. Owr outages usualy last 1-30min, the only down side is that it produces noise. but its not overwhelmingly loud, its manageable with the right placement right now its in a 1 1/2 foot space between the bed and the computer desk with the computer on top. no heat problems other the the computer heats the room, great in the winter not so much in the summer.
