And now I know a lot more. I'll not bore with a litany of details - if you're reading a review of the book here, you already know you are interested, so I'll write simply that I can vouch for what many others have said here. This is a very well-written and researched biography of a complex man, full of contradictions, like most of us, who was a magnificent ball player and solid manager, unlike nearly all of us.
It is kind of a shame that a whiff of scandal kept Speaker from what may well have turned into a laudable career as a manager. It does seem, from available evidence, that Speaker was at least passingly involved in an incident that also effectively ended Cobb's future aspirations as well. It seems like Spoke should have kept away from such, in retrospect, small-potatoes shenanigans, but, well, he didn't, and it kept him from official involvement for a long time. Perhaps his name would resonate louder and longer if he'd been able to move into a long-time manager's role, which he almost certainly would have. Que cera, I suppose.
Nonetheless, I can readily recommend this first-rate biography to anyone interested in early 20th Century baseball and the life and career of a widely overlooked great. I wish there was more film footage around for us to watch him action.
