I admit to being 15 years late to Robert Woodson's book, but not to Robert Woodson. As a devoted admirer and student of the late Jack Kemp, I heard Mr. Woodson's name several times over the years and I was aware of his work in communities and neighborhoods. I recently decided, in the midst of another project related to Jack Kemp, to get a copy of The Triumphs of Joseph.

I read this book in four reading sessions, from cover to cover. Again, I admit to being late to the party with this book, but perhaps a fresh, relevant review will inspire some new readers to find a copy and take action in their own communities and neighborhoods.

This book is not a list of Robert Woodson's accomplishments. It is not a brag sheet. Far from it. Woodson analyzes, evaluates and observes the current state of the civil rights movement (current as of 1998) and the seemingly unending cycle of poverty in America. He looks back at the history of the movement to supposedly make people free and independent, a movement which has scored uncounted amounts of taxpayer money, while leaving very little evidence of success.

Among the great terms Woodson used to to identify those more interested in personal power than in helping others find their way were "Guardians of Grievance" and "poverty industry." After Woodson's introduction and brief history of the poverty industry and the so-called civil rights movement, he takes the reader through the stories of some people who really are making a difference right where they live.

A few of the stories begin with some deplorable circumstances: one woman digging through a dumpster looking for food for her and her children; a man going into a filthy gas station bathroom to get high, with his infant daughter there sitting on the floor; a young man in and out of trouble, back in jail when he gets turned around and finds help from a probation officer who himself had a lost a son to senseless violence.

These people ultimately got it right. It wasn't always easy. But, every one of these people is a testament to the power of this country for people to help turn around the lives others, all without having to rely on the system, the government, to provide all the answers.

Yes, it's 15 years after its publication, but The Triumphs of Joseph is a short read and it should be used again as a conversation starter around this country for people interested in civic revival and renewing the American community. This is not a book full of stats. This is a book full of compelling evidence and real-life stories. William Schambra also offers up an epilogue of sorts at the end of the book, a very nice touch.

This was an eye-opener that validated the waste of big government in cities across america - versus small, focused, area-driven support organizations. These grass roots organizations support the needs of the cities in need with local, non-profits and volunteerism in the immediate areas of need. These victims - homeless, drug abusers (trying to become well again) become the solution of the city volunteers who support them. As they become "well" they help the small organization seek out alternative ways of support and are encouraged to help show others they can succeed by being part of the volunteering staff.
Not so for big government supported African-American groups who may want to help but see the advantages of having the big money coming in from the government with unrealistic goals or metrics on how they are helping (or hurting) the African-American people they are trying to assist. A good read which I am sure is a subject of controversy within the Black Communities in the inner cities.

Just started the book. So far it's got my interest, which is a good sign. If I start a book and it catches my interest early I usually finish the book. However the book was used, I wasn't aware it was used. It must have been used for a class assignment. Lots of underlining and foot notes. At first this put me off, however I'm finding it's interesting to read the observations.

The first half makes you so angry at the harm the government welfare industry is doing, millions wasted in so called agencies who are more interested in keeping you a victim so they can play compassion not do compassion. The second half is very encouraging to see there are Joseph's out there doing great work. Worth the read to help stop the current abuses in the system that refuses to admit regular caring people can do a better job with 70% less money.

As a Believer, Mr. Woodson shows us a path to truly living out our face, working towards establishing God's kingdom of love on this earth, as we await his return.

If you don't believe, for a couple of hours suspend your disbelief as you read this book. Look at the actual examples of success by local leaders living in the toughest neighborhoods, defying the odds, the experts, by improving the lives of people and neighborhoods government and society gave up on - after spending tens of millions of your tax dollars.

Even though this book was written two decades ago, it is still pertinent today. I was surprised how many poor and unsafe communities in the past were taken back from the gangs and other bad actors, with the help of of concerned people in those neighborhoods. Unfortunately the social justice policy makers are doing everything to stop this. The best way to bring these poor neighborhoods out of poverty is to provide school choice (get a good education) and doing everything possible to get rid of the violence (make the neighborhoods safe) by working directly with the community leaders/healers in these areas. This book has many heart warming stories of how community leaders worked with gang members to redirect their energy from being destructive to being a positive influence to the community. A must read for any elected leaders and concerned citizens.
