I really enjoyed reading this book. I was drawn in to the story from page one - always on the edge of my seat waiting for it to all fall apart- for them to get caught! I wasn't sure what was going to happen next!
Most of the world's population has become infertile. With a quarantine put in place to protect those unaffected, and strict rules in place, Jack Fraser wants nothing more that to be a key part of the resistance. But, he's only an errand boy to them. For now. After making a huge mistake resulting in the murder of an elderly couple, he'll prove himself somehow. Now, he's been given the job of babysitting Ela Hennessey, his boss, Jacob's grand-daughter. Keep her safe. But why is she in danger? Why is it so important that he never leave her side? What he thought would be a simple job turns in to so much more. Will he get it right this time, or will it all go to hell?
Ela Hennessey is the key. She knows it. Jacob knows it. And if Vector finds out, her very life is in danger. When information is revealed that explain the ties to both her father, and Jack's father, the situation becomes even more tenuous. With Vector on their trail, can they stay ahead or will it all come unraveled?
This was a great YA novel. Danger, excitement, betrayal, conspiracies, and secrets are all throughout this one! The ending of this one left me wishing Book 2 was here already!
Ela and her grand-father know the truth and when Vector finds out they are hot on her and Jacob’s trail. Can Jake keep her safe and redeem himself in the eyes of the resistance?
This YA novel was full of excitement, conspiracy, betrayal and Intrigue. Everything you could want in a story! I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
Although the story is set in the future, I found it not so far fetched that I couldn't get my head around what was happening. All of this could very well happen.
Looking forward to reading the next book
The story’s set some 30 years in the future when, except for ‘Naturals’ who the controlling administration use to seed the city-based ‘Elites’, most of the human race has been infertile for 20-odd years. Jack Fraser, 18, has run foul of the law before but he’s given the chance to redeem himself when he’s allocated the task of minding Ela, his boss’s granddaughter. Trouble is, Ela isn’t the little girl Jack remembers from their shared childhood; she’s a clever, beautiful, feisty young woman who gives as good as she gets. But why is she in danger? What secrets does she hold? Why was her father murdered and why did Jack’s father have to get out of New Zealand in a hurry?
Meg Buchanan handles the developing relationship between Jack and Ela beautifully. Jack’s character is great – he’s sensitive, strong and intelligent. Yeah, sometimes he doesn’t listen and the actions he choose go bad, but he’s hard on himself and does his best to make good.
Trojan Gene is a chilling story well told. The ending took my breath away. Recommended.
Jack Fraser, has been in trouble a few times with the local police but so badly wants to be part of the Resistance to help fight against the Administration - will his bad boy attitude go against him? Will his boss trust him enough to let him in? He's not sure where his place is. Is he just a messenger boy?
Ela Hennessey is an elite from the city and also Jack's boss's granddaughter, who Jack has known since they were kids and hasn't seen since Vector got her dad. If anyone finds out what she really is, they'll kill her. Jack's new assignment - to keep her safe. Not to leave her alone. Don't let her out of his sight. She is a natural.
Will the Resistance win? Can Jack keep Ela safe and out of Vector hands? What do their father's have to do with all of this?
Not my usual go to genre and I didn't know what to expect when I started, I was engrossed by the end of the second chapter. Awakening is a fantastically well written story. I look forward to reading book 2 to see where this story goes next.
The government are controlling the population with synthesised seeds and foods but Jack and his people are Locals who grow their own clear food so are fertile but are used as breeding stock for Elite people who live in the City.
Looking forward to book 2!
