I would not recommend this for children or preteens, unless they are prepared to deal with physical and/or sexual violence, psychological distress, and other adult themes. You obviously know your child better than I do, so I'll leave it to you to decide. While the protagonist is a child becoming an adult, the challenges she is put through are very adult circumstances.
With that out of the way, let me just say that Trolley rocks! As my first Steampunk novel I didn't know what to expect but I really enjoyed this book. The author created an intriguing world filled with interesting technology, a unique underground society, and what has become one of my favorite main characters in a long while. I just want to give Heather January a big hug, hold her tight, and keep her safe.
Larson tells a good story here. It's fun and flows easily from one scene to the next. I was impressed that descriptions of the technology never got boring or dragged on too long. You're told just enough that you can fill in the rest with your imagination and continue on with the story.
Buy this book. Read it. Enjoy.
