Trophies: The Ellandun Wars (Volume 1) Paperback – April 3, 2012
|New from||Used from|
"A wonderful blend of everything -- mystery, paramilitary-style action, romance, family saga. Not a grab-bag of ingredients carelessly tossed together, but magnificent strands woven together into intricate, mutually supporting patterns." J Yendor
"Charles ... reminded me of a few vets ... at the VA Medical Center... Grey has a unique way of ... taking you from present time to days gone by each time giving you something more... Charles even with war torn memories delivered it in the end. These guys are often forgotten or abused in many books like this." Logic101
"Good story." gayle ury
About the Author
Hi, I'm Gunnar Grey. I write books. I'm a historian, political junkie, target shooter, and retired adventurer and equestrian. I read avidly and post reviews or at least ratings for most of the books I read. Occasionally my poor husband surfaces from beneath a pile of paperbacks, gasping for air... but I shouldn't bore you with personal issues.
I live in Humble, Texas, just north of Houston, with four parakeets, the aforementioned husband (who's even more entertaining than the birds), an orange betta fish with no manners, a fig tree, the lawn from the bad place, three armloads of potted plants, and a coffee maker that's likely the most important item we own.

After reading Grey's Deal With The Devil, Part One and Deal With the Devil Part Two, I knew I enjoyed her very capable and creative writing style. In Trophies (The Ellandun Wars) she has created another winner. The complex plot and the action scenes in this book kept me turning pages, but it's the characters that will stay with me, especially the protagonist Charles (AKA "Robbie".) A pivotal event in Charles's childhood and the effects it had on him all his life made me care about him, especially as he worked to resolve his life-long anger and pain. His attacks of post-traumatic stress syndrome were presented in a startling and realistic manner--I could feel his terror. Although he is a master thief, he is a moral man--a contrast that makes him even more interesting. The other characters were well-defined too. I enjoyed Grey's humor throughout, and the ending left me satisfied.
I highly recommend Trophies to readers of all ages (no profanity, sex, graphic violence), and I'm looking forward to future books in the Ellandun Wars series.
My biggest gripe is certain parts of the military aspect. I have been 12 years married to a military man, and some of the things she writes (all minor, but still...) should have been better researched. Military personnel, set your expertise aside when you read this, or you'll get irritated. I was laughing at some points because I was thinking of what my husband would say if it were a movie...
As stories go, though, it is a pretty good one, and the format for this Kindle edition was perfect, no typing or editing errors that I noticed. Smooth reading, romantically clean, and good entertainment for a rainy day or two!
And I love the characters, who span the entire spectrum from a weary soldier to a cold, strict father to a mousy cousin. Charles, Caren, Edith, Patty, they all continue to develop as the story unfolds, and you begin to know them. Oh, and Sherlock too -- I am telling you, Jack Ryan had nothing on that guy.
I simply love, love, love this book. You don't want to miss it.
