Editorial Reviews

Review

“In the third and final book of the Big Sky series (which can be read out of order), Hunter may use the term “cowboy” too much, but she creates an endearing story of a strong woman who learns to have faith in people and God’s plan---even if it doesn’t make sense at first. This read will not only have fans cheering the characters on, it will leave them feeling inspired in their own lives.” “Part of Hunter’s (The Accidental Bride) Big Sky Romance series, this stand-alone installment brings readers back to Moose Creek, Mont., and some familiar characters. Horse trainer Annie Wilkerson cannot stand cowboys. After watching her mother get ditched repeatedly by heartthrob ranch hands, she is bound and determined to keep herself and her kid sister out of their love ’em and leave ’em arms. She seems to have succeeded when she snags banker John Oakley, the epitome of safety and security, and directs her wayward sister toward college and a settled life as a mother. Then flirtatious Dylan Taylor needs Annie’s equine expertise to keep his beloved Braveheart from being put down after the horse goes blind. To make matters worse, Annie needs something from Dylan, too. Their mutual dependency and complicated relationship sets the stage for a story filled with romantic tension, as Annie must choose between the stability John offers and the excitement Dylan arouses. While the ending may seem predictable, Hunter’s well-developed characters and plot twists make for a delightful and inspirational journey.' (Publishers Weekly)

“Jane Austen fans will appreciate the subtle yet delightful Austen vibe that flavors this contemporary cowboy romance---and not just because Pride and Prejudice is protagonist Annie's favorite book. The Trouble with Cowboys is a fast, fun, and touching read with the added draw of a first kiss that is sure to make my Top 5 Fictional Kisses of 2012. So saddle up, ladies: We have a winner!” (USAToday.com)

“A fun weekend read with equal parts spunk and spice, Denise Hunter's The Accidental Bride will keep readers lassoed up tight 'til the cows come home.” (USA Today)

Annie Wilkerson is head of her household but she is single, she hovers over her sister Sierra and her nephew Ryder like a mother hen. Yes she is always pecking at Sierra for not taking responsibility for herself and her five year old son Ryder. Sierra only has one more semester of college and Annie is determined that her sister finish college and get her degree. As things stand now Sierra can't seem to keep a job so it is on Annie's shoulders to support her sister and nephew. Annie worries that Sierra is too much like their mother chasing after cowboys. In her opinion the trouble with cowboys is they are not responsible or faithful and she wants nothing to do with them. Her father was one of those cowboys and he walked out on them when they were little.

Annie is a very well sought after horse trainer specializing in abused horses or horses with some kind of disability. Against her better judgement she took on a job of working with a horse that was going blind and the horse was having a difficult time adjusting to the loss of sight. The only problem is she can't stand Dylan Taylor the owner of the horse, Dylan is the epitome of the cowboys she tries so hard to avoid. He is handsome smooth flirtatious and no doubt a Casanova. But they might be able to work something out. Since her grandfather passed away she has taken over as a column writer for a small newspaper he was writing for about horse. Now the newspaper wants her to switch her subject to the love-forlorn. She would no longer be writing about horses plus she knows nothing about the love-forlorn but Dylan most definitely does. So they have agreed he would help her with her column and she would take on the training of his horse Braveheart.

But has she misjudged Dylan? Was she seeing him like the character Mr.

The third and final installment of the Big Sky Romance series focuses on the Wilkerson sisters, Annie and Sierra. Annie is a successful columnist writing for Montana Living and she is also a horse trainer for Moose Creek. Their father left them when they were just kids, their mother died later on as well as their grandfather. Annie has spent most of her young life taking care for Sierra. When her sister became pregnant at age sixteen, Annie became more like a mother instead of a sister. Sierra kept the baby boy, completed her GED, and is now attending college. Annie is having financial problems as she tries to pay for Sierra's college tuition.

Annie dislikes cowboys, even though she lives in Montana where she can't throw a rock out a window without hitting a cowboy. Her father was a cowboy and so were the countless loser boyfriends that her late mother had. She doesn't trust cowboys!

Well, that is until she takes a job ailing the horse, Braveheart, which belongs to the cowboy bachelor Dylan Taylor in exchange for his help in answering some of her columnist reader letters. It sound simple, but then as the two start spending time together, sparks fly!

Annie wants to trust this cowboy, but can she forgive the previous cowboys that have broken her heart?

I have read the other books in the series and I eagerly agreed to review this book from Litfuse Publicity in exchange for an honest review. The theme of the book is forgiving others that have hurt you and to try to get on with your life, which is what happens to the main character Annie. It seems that every cowboy she has ever crossed paths with has broken her heart.

The third and final installment of The Big Sky Romance series, "The Trouble With Cowboys" by Denise Hunter, doesn't disappoint. While some authors are devoted to pumping out books like a bubble gum factory, Denise has a way of writing characters that leave an imprint on your heart that you won't forget. You don't mind that you have to wait for months in between novels because you always know what you're going to get in return: consistent storylines with memorable characters and a lesson that will help grow your faith.

Forced to grow up too fast, Annie Wilkerson makes a promise to her dying grandfather and takes on the responsibility of caring for her unruly teenage sister. Determined to put her sister through college, Annie is a horse trainer by day and moonlights as the writer for a column solely devoted to imparting her wisdom as a trainer. However, as the world becomes more and more attached that wonderful invention called the `internet' (thanks, Al Gore...) she learns from her editor that her column is being replaced by a topic that you can never have enough answers for: love, and they want Annie to write it. Wholly unqualified to write a column for the local lovelorn, Annie seeks the advice of all-knowing and confident Dylan Taylor. After all, he's romanced just about every woman in Moose Creek... he has to know SOMETHING about love, right?

The budding friendship and firecracker chemistry that existed between Annie and Dylan will keep you turning the pages until the very last one. Some of the one-liners that Dylan would throw at Annie even had me rolling my eyes at times, but Annie was just the girl to put him in his place. While I LOVED this story, I am so disappointed that I won't be returning to Moose Creek, Montana any time soon.
