Product Description

Batch two of Decca's Opera Series, reissuing many of the greatest opera recordings of the last 50 years from Decca and Philips. This series re-establishes Decca as THE OPERA COMPANY. Original sleeve packaging. The complete libretto (offered in original language and translated into English, French, and German), is readable not only as PDF download but also via Amazon Kindle and the iPad.

"Pavarotti... responds with a bravura performance. Some 14 years after he had made his first recording for Decca (opposite Joan Sutherland in 1976) his voice is as heroic and golden as ever, and with superstardom has come a greater freedom and flair, with crystal-clear words delivered as characterfully as ever. The other three principals make a strong, reliable team. Antonella Banaudi - who was Leonora opposite Pavarotti in the live Florence production - sings cleanly and firmly, with a mezzo-ish tinge in the tone, fine flexibility and a precise trill.Shirley Verrett makes as firm an Azucena as ever... Leo Nucci is strong and reliable as the Count... Mehta is vital as well as brisk in an opera which brings out the best in him." The Penguin Guide -- The Penguin Guide

I have so many versions of this opera and I thought I already had the best version, but this CD sounds so good, the singers are unbelievable and the orchestra is the best, that now this is my favorite version. I've listened to it three times this week alone.
