The Troy-Bilt TB516 EC edger is the simplest way to put the finishing edge on your lawn. The 4-cycle no mix oil and gas engine is mounted on a steel frame, so you don’t need to use a trimmer or carry the extra weight. It features a 9-inch dual-tip steel blade that can cut up to 2.5 inches in depth. The edger can be raised and lowered with six height positions and is backed by a two-year warranty. Took a gamble, no issues here!

***EDIT After almost 2 years of use*** Still working quite well, and starts actually pretty easy. Usually starts after two or three pulls.

Original Post:
Just got this in the mail today, followed the instructions, added the oil and new gas, pumped the rubber button 20 times, and it started right up on the 3rd pull. I let it warmed up for 30 to 60 seconds, and it edged my driveway quite well. Seems that I had more than enough power. I was skeptical when I bought this, due to the mix reviews, but so far so good.

There was a review I read, stating that it doesn't edge well, but I beg to differ. Feel free to take a look at my photo to show how well it did first try. I did set the depth gauge back 3 from the deep edge cut, so it wouldn't tear up my semi wet lawn. Looks like I can finally throw my other electric cord edger away!

I'll be curious to see the life span of this tool. I'll update if anything changes, but so far so good.

Does what it supposed to do, but temperamental.

It does what it is supposed to do but is temperamental and does not work well with much resistance. This is probably expected for the price paid. I used to edge my driveway and walkway with a weed-eater edging attachment until the weed-eater died. This was a replacement and does not work as well as my previous equipment. After running for a while and turning off, it will not run at full throttle for about 5-10 minutes after restarting and acts like it is flooded. The oil compartment is poorly designed (on the side and opens horizontally) and does not have a dipstick. It is very difficult to tell the oil level.

I really do not understand the bad reviews of this device. My only complaint is that it doesn't do the work for me automatically. Seriously people, what are you trying to cut? Yeah the blades spin backwards. So what. It works without issue and has cut my edging time by over half. Worth every penny.

I am living in Upstate NY - Near Syracuse. We have had a horrible summer, rain, rain and more rain. So every time I have tried to use the edger, i run into issues!! It clogs with mud and and sod where the guard is. I have to clear that area quite often. The sod is quite heavy. So making a "trench," an edge has been not been very defined. All that being said, the equipment is very light weight. I have Parkinsons and have balance issues. I am able to use the edger, controlling it with ease. Due to my illness, I am not able to start it. However, we bought the drill attachment to start it. I feel as soon as the weather dries out and the ground, which may be not until 2018-spring, the equipment will be much easier to use, without the clogging and it will make an edge as it should.

Complete waste of money

This edger is a complete waste of money. I purchased this edger at the beginning of the summer thinking it would last several years; however, it has been hard to start for the last month and now will not start at all. I thought Troybuilt was a quality brand, but with this experience I highly doubt that is the case. What kind of lawn equipment doesn’t even last for 1 season-Troybuilt. If you are interested in wasting $200, then purchase this complete piece of junk and you will not be disappointed- it’s guarenteed to breakdown and leave you disappointed. My last edger was a Craftsman and lasted over 20 years, so it’s not like I don’t know how to properly use and take care of my equipment. I recently looked at some other reviews of this edger and a lot of other people have reported the same issues I have experienced, so why is Amazon still selling this piece of junk???

It does not work well on Florida's thick floritam type grasses. It's a bit wimpy.
The wire standoff gauge and the plastic blade guard are classic garbage.
the little 29cc engine has a tough time of it although it runs very but people with southern heat resistant thick widebladed grass should at a very minimum purchase one with a bigger engine.
The price is somewhat realistic for what you get, but I think it will work better on northern rye blends much better.
Overall not impressed.

Breaks easily!

I purchased this edger last year and used it about 8 times last fall and this summer. Rope pull broke and wouldn't work anymore. I took it in to a Troy-built warranty center and after about 3 weeks, they fixed it on warranty. The dogs on the flywheel broke off. I got it back and used it 3 times and the same problem occurred. I took it back and they contacted MTD, the manufacturer of Troy-built and they said that I am pulling too hard and they would not cover it anymore. I have had dozens of lawn products and have not had any break like this. This is a very fragile product and I would stay away from it!

Edges well, but hard to start

This will do a great job of cutting a clean, straight edge into your lawn so long as:

1.) The soil is dry. Moist soil will clog up the blade and maybe cause it to seize.
2.) There are no roots in the way. The engine is relatively weak and will not cut through sizeable roots.
3.) You can get it to start in the first place. Straight out of the box this was difficult to get started and keep running. I've had the best luck getting it to go when I over-prime it. Give it a good 15-20 pumps rather than the 10 that it says to do. Also, you're supposed to have to only push down the choke lever if it's under 50-degrees outside. Wrong! I had to do it every time to get this to run. Once you do have it up and running though, I haven't had any problems keeping it that way.

Overall, it's a good edger with a bad engine.

UPDATE 04-28-2020: It's still a pain to start, but it still works well once you get it going. I suggest using the JumpStart drill bit to get the engine to turn over:
