The instructor barely gives you any directions. The camera angles are annoying. For exapmle you get views of a backup dancers' abs, but not of feet actually doing the steps & without instruction how can you follow along? The backup dancers lose their timing, and look totally unauthentic as hip hop dancers. My favorite is when the instructor loses her place. Lol! Don't try it, you'll be disappointed. I only finished it b/c I'm stubborn.

NOTE: Because Amazon currently has several product pages for this same DVD, I am posting this review on all product pages.

When I first discovered Gloria Araya-Quinlan's Latin workouts, I really loved them. I thought she was an excellent instructor, seamlessly linking together dance combos that worked well together. However, as I've gotten into her hip-hop workouts, I've realized that Latin is definitely more of her forté. Her hip-hop workouts (including this one) are severely disjointed. While the other ones I have done at least were always geared toward a beginner/intermediate exerciser, this are all over the place, making it not enjoyable for beginners, intermediates, and advanced dancers.

The DVD is broken down into 6 5-minute sections, only 3 of which are cardio dance. The following are my opinions of each:

WARM UP - Unnecessary. This is simply an awkward mix of dance steps. There is nothing that separates it as a warm up. It isn't cardio at all, and it doesn't stretch out the body.

Combo 1 - Incredibly slow. Gloria breaks down the moves to points where beginners can easily follow but still not get a good workout. I didn't elevate my heart rate until the very end when she finally sped things up. The moves weren't challenging at all.

Combo 2 - Badly taught. After elevating my heart rate slightly in the last routine, Gloria slowed it down again by breaking down the first step of the routine. This move is the easiest of the routine, though, and she doesn't break down the harder moves later on in the combo, which makes no sense! I was able to follow along after messing up quite a bit with the faster, more challenging moves.

Combo 3 - Confusing.

There are both positive and negative aspects to this DVD workout. Negative - The instructor didn't go over the moves enough times for me to fully grasp and feel comfortable with the move. She'd start out very slow, which was good, but then when she'd dance the the move at full speed, it was faster than expected and I was thrown off. I never felt comfortable with the dance at full speed at all. Plus, you need a lot of room to move, which was something I don't have in my living room, so that was a downside. Positive - I enjoyed the energy of the choreography and of the instructor. Although I was having a hard time keeping up with the choreography, she made me want to keep at it. I also liked the fact that all the dancers in the video looked like 'real' people and weren't unattainable body types. It made me feel like anyone could perform this choreography and you don't have to look like a model to have fun and perform. Another upside was that the choreography was addicting and I'd find myself practising on my own to try and perfect it for the next time I do this DVD. The video might not be for absolute beginners, but for the more advanced, I'd say keep at it and you have a great, heart pounding workout on your hands!
