It's 1972 in Chickasaw, Alabama—a time when kids ride their bikes all over town, spend lazy summer days finding shapes in the clouds, squirt each other with the water hose, catch lightning bugs in a jar, and play outside until the streetlights come on. Best friends Jeana, Wade, and Billy Joe have lived on the same street all their lives, but things start to change the summer after the fourth grade. The beginning was a little "elementary" for me, BUT, a must in order to be able to continue to "whole" story without questions........Loved the childhood references that I remember so well and like to drive by and reminisce about. Joyce has completed a great service/justice for all of us '60's and 70's kids that grew up in Chickasaw. Such wonderful memories.

Love is a funny thing when you’re only ten years old. True Blue opens with Wade, Billy Joe, and Jeana making a pact to be blood brothers for life. This ideal childhood is interrupted by puppy love. The boys vie over Jeana’s affections. Set in Chickasaw, Alabama, in the seventies, Scarbrough captures the time beautifully for small town America. She literally takes you back to the feelings you felt when in fourth grade. Wade and Billy Joe really learn how much they care about Jeana when she gets the chicken pox and is anemic too. Since Wade had them already, he gets alone time with Jeana that makes Billy Joe jealous, jeopardizing the boys’ best friend status.
Jeana has a heart of gold and so do Wade and Billy Joe. They befriend the neighborhood “monster,” thought of that way because his house is in disrepair. Wade edges in on capturing Jeana’s young heart, causing feelings to surface that Jeanna loves and hates because of how it makes Billy Joe feel. All goes smoothly until one Mickey enters the picture disrupting Billy Joe and Wade’s friendship. Talk about throwing a monkey wrench into the works, this book has it all: love, adventure, antics, silliness and serious as rain moments too. Although this book is geared for the young, it brought out the young at heart in me, reminiscing my own small town childhood. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it for you too.

A must read book of bonds and friendship

This book took me by the heart strings and wouldn’t let go. I loved all the characters as I usually do with Joyce’s books. I’ve read them over and over again. Her characters are not just characters, but people who you will grow to love and cherish. Watching them grow up was wonderful. Finding out what they had gone through, all about one Wades childhood, touched me deeply. This story will enchant you and leave you thirsty for more. Once I started reading this, I didn’t want to put it down. However, I did only because I wanted it to last. The coming of age story, not only shows the kids growing up, but shows that some bonds are meant to last a lifetime, through life and death. I can’t recommend this book enough. If I could give is more than five stars, I would.
