The action was fast, as usual. The sexy scenes are there, but the action and the character development drive the story forward. I really loved how both Dreya and Braden respected each other's abilities. It showed in the way that they treated each other. Is there a little concern about if they would have common interests? Yes, but that is to be expected given where they each were in life. They both deal with it believably and respectfully in my opinion. We do get to see some characters from previous stories and meet new ones as well.
My only gripe and it's a minor one is that we are left with a cliffhanger and have to wait until September to see what happens next, but that means it was a very good story! It also means that I am impatient when I like a story.
If you have been waiting like I have, I don't think you will be disappointed. If you have never read X=Ops series before, you can read this one and follow along pretty well. However, I would recommend reading one of her novellas in the series, like Her Special Alpha or Her Secret Agent (one of which is free on the Kindle and one is $1.99, but I can't remember which is which.) Remember though, that novellas have fast action and not much time to develop stories or characters. That being said, I bet you will end up doing what I did after that and buy the rest of the series and read it in order. Then you will be waiting like I am. Enjoy!
But I am here to review book 6, Her True Match, which works great as a stand-alone and as an introduction to the series. Since neither the main character or her romantic partner come from within the DCO or the secret agent community, nor are they familiar with how "were-" powers actually works - the thief had to figure out everything on her own and is often amazed at how her powers work now she has people to compare notes with -, a reader gets an excellent exposure to how the X-ops world works, both the paranormal and the conspiracies. If you are not going to start at the beginning of the series, I highly recommend you start with this book.
I fell in love with Dreya and Branden when they were introduced in Her Rogue Alpha. Their characters were so strong, they overshadowed the people the book was actually about and made me buy their book, Her True Match. The promise from the previous book was 100% delivered during True Match.
The love match between a thief and cop is a favorite in the romance-thriller subgenre, but Ms. Tyler keeps this cliche romance fresh. Sure you are familiar with the cliche, but these two people are in love for the first time and their mutual amazement of each other's skills and their instinctive trust in each other make you forget any other book of this type of "cliche" pairing. Dreya and Branden are made for each other.
A cop and a thief. They end up partnered together because he knows how she thinks and moves. She thinks he's cute and kind of sexy.
The sixth full length book in the X-Ops series. Intrigue and shifters. Espionage and mad scientist doctors.
Moves quickly. Entertaining. I really liked the hero. He understands her enough to stand back and let her succeed or fail and is there to catch and support her. Plus he's not phased at all by her claws or glowing eyes. A strong personality but doesn't feel the need to oppress. Very nice.
Read the prior books in the series to fully appreciate this one.
Explosive ending. Cliff hanger for the series.
"Braden let the guy collapse to the floor, then took the weapon from his limp hand and dropped it in the toilet.
He turned to find Dreya looking at him with a shocked look on her face.
"What?" he asked.
"You came to get me," she said.
"I'm getting a feeling that is going to be my role in this partnership," he said, grabbing her hand and heading for the door.
"You steal things and I come get your sexy a$s out of trouble."
He glanced at her to see her grinning.
"You think I have a sexy a$s?"
Braden stifled a groan. Being her partner was going to kill him - or drive him nuts. Tommy was probably laughing so hard, he was surprised he didn't hear the sound coming all the way down from heaven."
