Amazon.com Review

The best letters are the ones that tell you everything. Not just the big, important stuff, but the little details of life. The True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters is a one-sided epistolary novel. We get to read all the letters written by Olivia Hunt, erstwhile film producer, over the year she learns her sister Maddie has cancer. Olivia scuttles between her hometown in Ohio, where Maddie still lives, and Los Angeles, where she's trying to get a film version of Don Quixote off the ground. Along the way, she writes newsy letters to her best friend Tina, crabby mash notes to her ex-boyfriend Michael, worried missives to her parents, breezy memos to (real-life) entertainment honchos, and cheery entertainments to Maddie herself. These epistles are crammed full of the asides and rambling descriptions that make for good letters, and good books. She writes, for instance, "I went down to the cafeteria. Judy, the cashier, told me her daughter passed the Bar exam, so that was nice to hear. She said I looked tired. I ate some iceberg lettuce with orange dressing in the empty cafeteria. And two chocolate chip cookies." It's not poetry, but the orange dressing and the chatty cashier go a long way toward capturing hospital life. It also helps that first-time author Elisabeth Robinson is a producer and screenwriter who worked on Braveheart (among others); she's just as detailed and knowing when she describes the seemingly Herculean task of producing a film. She includes gentle send-ups of Robin Williams and John Cleese, who star in the fictional picture, and terrifying glimpses of executive tantrums. (A Hollywood background has its downsides: the book occasionally strays into formula.) In the end, Robinson's hard work with all those details ultimately results in a believable, lovable heroine. --Claire Dederer

From Publishers Weekly

Hollywood and leukemia are the two unlikely poles of this wrenching, tragicomic first novel by independent producer and screenwriter Robinson. Pouring out her troubles in epistolary form, 34-year-old Olivia Hunt, a struggling film producer, chronicles a year of dizzying highs and devastating lows. As the novel begins, she receives news that her younger sister, Madeline, recently married and happily settled in the sisters' Ohio hometown, has been diagnosed with leukemia. Olivia herself is at loose ends, trying to jump-start her career by putting together a big-budget production of Don Quixote. Impatient, ambitious and often caustic, Olivia is very different from her big-hearted, big-haired sister, and as she flies back and forth between California and Ohio, she reflects on the choices she has made in long, searching letters to friends and family. Though she and her ex-boyfriend Michael, a painter living in New Mexico, are still in love with each other, they are both too devoted to their careers to settle down together. Just as it seems things might be patched up between them, Don Quixote swings into high gear and Olivia heads off to film in Spain. Her Hollywood adventures are pitch-perfect and hilarious, with Robin Williams ("like a beaver in a sweatshirt and jeans") and Jerry Bruckheimer, among others, making cameos. No less impressive is Robinson's unsentimental chronicling of the progress of Maddie's illness and the alternately heroic and selfish reactions of those around her, including the sisters' mother, an anxious children's book writer, and their father, a retired attorney and alcoholic. Olivia's cynicism, compassion and loyalty come through as funny, real and inspiring, and the novel's epistolary format is smoothly employed. Moving but never maudlin, this is an accomplished debut.

Too often, glowing reviews turn out to be deceptive, leading a reader to be disappointed in the book at issue. In the case of THE TRUE AND OUTSTANDING ADVENTURES OF THE HUNT SISTERS, the reviews were not complimentary enough.

Author Elisabeth Robinson tells a complicated and moving story in the form of letters written by Olivia, her heroine, to the people in Olivia's life.

Olivia is commuting to Ohio, where her younger sister is dying of leukemia, from Los Angeles, where she is in the process of producing (as the expression goes) a "major motion picture."

In her letters, Olivia explores the incomprehensible suffering inflicted by the conventional treatments of cancer that her sister courageously endures while she herself attempts to hold her own in the competitive Hollywood studio system.

At many points, Robinson's prose is absolutely lyrical. Her insights are piercing and her powers of observation are breathtaking.

The reader will come away with a much more thorough insight into the suffering of a leukemia patient, as well as a peek at how the entertainment industry actually operates. In their own fashions, these two stories examine activities almost equal in their cruelties.

This is a lyrical, touching novel, and it is not overstating to call it "brilliant."

Very few novels capture the essence of what it is to be a sister. Elisabeth Robinson is able to communicate many of the complexities of having a sister while trying to maintain a life. I was captivated by the character of Maddie, someone who has issues and who isn't polished around the edges despite her perceived glamorous career. In a day and age of short emails and instant messages, Maddie's beautifully written letters inspired me to start penning my own because as a sister, as a friend and as a daughter I would love to receive words from the heart from those I cherish.

Elisabeth Hunt had many complex personalities in this book and could have developed their relationships more. She stayed away from overdeveloping the outside relationships and left me wanting to know more. I would be interested in follow up novels on the issues of Maddie's Alcoholic father, self-absorbed ex-boyfriend and most of all, her friend Tina who is dealing with the issues of infertility and moving ahead in the world while trying to nurture her child and her husband's career.

Great read! Original format captured the feelings of the characters; evocative and funny and heartwarming/breaking. I definitely recommend this book...entertaining, but yet inspirational for those who wonder if barking up the tree of their dreams is worthwhile, and why. Both sisters show a certain but different type of courage and fear. I loved it.

First, a clarification: THE TRUE AND OUTSTANDING ADVENTURES OF THE HUNT SISTERS is marketed as a work of fiction and I read it and am reviewing it as such. It's the story of sixteen months in the life of a thirty-ish Hollywood movie producer -- struggling in her job, in her love life, and with her family including a suddenly sick younger sister -- told completely through the letters the protagonist writes during that time.
It is an entertaining story, a light and fast read. The format gives it an interactive feel -- there are no transitions between letters, thus readers take a more active role in re-orienting themselves as to time and place and recipient of each letter. The lack of transitions is effectively used to surprise the reader with events that occur between letters. Some of the best are comic surprises, for example when one letter ends with the protagonist insisting she will just absolutely never ever agree to some thing - and the next beginning with her having acquiesced ... the reader smiles knowingly while imagining the details of what led to the compromise. The novel even exposes a little about the work of a producer -- and while watching a movie this weekend, I found myself appreciating the ratio of "covered" to "exterior" locations.
I would have liked something more at the very beginning of the story to help me buy into the protagonist's dedication to handwritten letters ... I kept thinking, "why not e-mails?" One answer is because the letters were all dated in 1998 and 1999, when e-mail was still revving up -- but then that made me wonder, "Why specify 1999?" in a novel published in 2004. There was also a reference to paper airline tickets, which felt dated. And the letter format eventually became tiresome. Exhausting, even. It is the ultimate in first-person point of view, and I craved a break from being inside the protagonist's brain, yet kept reading "just one more" and then "just one more" instead of putting the book aside for awhile.
Read this novel for its poignant glimpse into life's important relationships, and especially for its entertaining glimpse into the business of Hollywood.

Read this for book club and was quite happy with it. The Don Quixote symbolism is apparent if you know the story. I identified with the antagonist; others in my group hated her. The end of the book was expected....and not. Made for a great discussion.

I thought this was a great beach/summer book that was easy to read and had interesting characters. I didn't know how much really went into movie making and budgets, etc. Maddie's illness made me so sad....The problem I have is that Olivia didn't seem at the end to very much care about Maddie's death ie. it ended too soon after her death to let the reader get a feeling for what Olivia thought....

This is one of those truely gripping books you cannot let go of while reading and once you are finished, the story does not let go of you.

I read this book about two months ago but still I find myself thinking of the story and the characters and the tragic end (sniff!).

This is one of the best books I have ever read.
