Collard has a nice start for a couple of follow up novels. His dialogue between characters is a strength in his characters, while developing growth in minor characters remains a bit of a stretch (does Robert grow into more of an officer now that he has seen the elephant?).
I've enjoyed all Collard's novels and short stories about Jack. Jack is not a guy you'd want marrying your daughter, but you'd love to have him protecting her.

Whilst always the hero, he courts danger like no other, making it a page turner every time, to see how he gets out of the predicament he is in.
My only negative thought is that like all heroes , his every shot counts, every blade thrust scores, whereas the enemy could not hit a barn door from point blank range, and might as well have a stick of rhubarb not a sword the way they wield them at him.
