The True Temper action hoe is great for weeding and cultivating around live growing plants. It works by using a back and forth push-pull motion to cut weed roots deep under the surface. This tools cuts weeding in half the time
From the Manufacturer
All gardening tools are not created equal. And what you really need is not only the right tool for the right job, but also something that's right for you too. Smaller and lighter tools for smaller hands. Ergonomic tools designed to reduce stress on the back, muscles and joints. Rugged tools for the professional user. Even lil' (but always genuine) tools for your lil' helpers.

The Action Hoe, while not perfect, is a significant improvement over a regular hoe. It took about half the time and (more importantly) half the exertion to weed the yard. And that included raking up the cuttings, which I often skip due to fatigue.
It is so effective that sometimes the weeds don't even move, leading you to think it didn't cut anything. But when you reach down to pull it (or rake it), you find, sure enough, the weed is in fact cleanly cut. It also doesn't disturb as much dirt as a regular hoe, which means you stay cleaner and raking up the cuttings in far easier.
Far less effort is required. The action is more like raking, rather chopping with a regular hoe. Short, quick strokes seem to work the best. I found forward strokes were effective only on flat, relative firm ground. Backward strokes always work well. I estimate that about 95% of the time, it cleanly cuts on the first pass. More stubborn weeds fall quickly on the second pass just by changing the angle of attack. Overall, shoulder and back fatigue is significantly reduced.
It does clog up in weeds with long runners, but so does a regular hoe. It does surprisingly well lopping off the top of grass growing up through pavement. Does a fair job against the edge of pavement, edging, and walls. Some spots still require a weeding knife to do a thorough job, but at least the Action Hoe removes the bulk of the mass.
Definitely a welcome addition to my gardening tools.
Build quality is good. Would have preferred a fiberglass handle...but I didn't see that anyone was making one.
