However, there are some tricks to using it that I didn't understand for quite a while; The first few times out this will bump all over and not appear to be doing much. Slow down your movements city slicker. Slowly go back and forth on the edge (in one place) with a bit of downward pressure. This will create a grove for the blades to move freely, create a sharp line and prevent underground vines from creeping. Sweep the dirt and grass away and then behold the awesomeness that you have created. Each time you do it will become easier. Soon after lawn care specialist will soon try to recruit you.
Here are some tips to help you use this.
#1- Understand that the first time you use it, the ground will be harder to "break through." After that, you will already have made an edge and that should make it a lot more easier for your subsequent uses.
#2- Recommend you use it hours after or the day after a rain storm. This makes the ground softer and easier to cut through.
#3- Once you start it (get a few feet of edging done), I would pull it back and then push it forward about 6" to 18" into uncut areas (think of back 2 feet and then forward 3 feet). I would keep doing this all the way down the driveway.
I was also disappointed that it's not exactly as pictured. When I saw the picture and the gold color of the blades, I incorrectly assumed that they were titanium coated the same way they do drill bits to help them hold an edge better. It's actually just "Clear-coated gray-steel" just like the description says, so that one's on me.
I added pictures to compare the rotary edger to a gas powered edger. The first picture is the results from the rotary edger on my yard, and the second was my neighbors yard after a gas edger was used. As you can see, there really isn't much of a difference at all. As stated above, it's hard to get the groove started the first couple of times, but now I can edge my long driveway, around my mailbox, sidewalk, and back porch in about 5 minutes.
He had left it to me before, but he likes this. You do need to establish an edge for ease of use. It will take elbow grease at first. But once the edge is there, it's quick and reliable and easy to store. Super cheap when compared.to other methods plus you get exercise. Now that earns you a beer!
